Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks innovative PhD graduates to join a group focused on rapid capability advancements in missile defense. You will perform systems analysis, identify gaps, and develop novel AI/ML and data fusion concepts for defense applications at Huntsville, AL with back-up support from Laurel, MD.

You will help design, simulate, and test algorithms, model complex systems, and deliver results to sponsors. U.S.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Math, CS, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with probabilistic algorithms and numerical methods.
  • Programming experience: MATLAB, C++, Python, or other high-level languages.
  • Highly self-motivated to dig into data to root cause issues and understand system performance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team, with collaboration across teams/contractors.
  • Eligible to obtain Interim Top Secret clearance by start date; can pursue Top Secret/SCI clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Located at Sponsor site in Huntsville, AL with reach back to Laurel, MD.
  • Conduct research and development for U.S. Missile Defense systems.
  • Assist in development, testing, and analysis of sensing, engagement, and fire control concepts.
  • Implement algorithms and design modeling and simulation components of systems.
  • Develop AI/ML-based concepts and technical solutions.
  • Apply data fusion and tracking concepts for object tracking and discrimination.
  • Analyze simulation outputs and translate results into clear insights for sponsors.
  • Deliver presentations to technical staff, program leadership, and government sponsors.
  • Develop prototype capabilities and transition ideas to fielded systems.
