Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD invites students and interns to join the Decision Systems Group to apply AI, data science, and software engineering to national and health security challenges.

You will develop AI/ML algorithms, work on explainable and trustworthy AI, analytics for surveillance and data fusion, and build pipelines that turn research into deployable, real-world capabilities as part of interdisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Pursuing Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in CS, Math, Data Science, AI, SE, or related field.
• GPA minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Experience developing software or analyzing with Python, R, Java, C, or C++.
• Strong written and oral communication; collaboration in a multidisciplinary team.
• US Citizenship required to access APL facilities.

Responsibilities

• Develop and prototype AI/ML algorithms and software systems addressing national and health security challenges.
• Explore methods for making AI-enabled systems explainable, interpretable, transparent, and trustworthy.
• Develop analytics for surveillance and situational-awareness applications including detection, data fusion, and decision support.
• Build and operationalize analytic pipelines transforming large, heterogeneous data sets into actionable information.
• Work with interdisciplinary teams to design experiments, evaluate algorithms, and transition research concepts into operational capabilities.
