Job Description
The Dean of Public Safety Programs is a 12-month, full-time staff position reporting to the Vice President of Career and Workforce Development. The Dean serves as a mentor and facilitator for the school’s faculty, advancing the college’s vision and goals while providing strategic oversight for Basic Law Enforcement Training ( BLET ), Inservice Law Enforcement Training, Fire Services, EMS , Correctional Training and Correctional Education Programs.
In this role, the Dean manages budgeting, faculty supervision, and program implementation to drive student success. This position is central to maintaining vital partnerships with regional public safety agencies and community stakeholders to meet evolving workforce demands.
The Dean ensures all programs meet rigorous accreditation and state regulatory standards while fostering a collaborative environment for professional growth. Key responsibilities include oversight of curriculum development, course scheduling, and student learning outcomes. As a high-level liaison, the Dean acts as a primary advocate for the school, ensuring instructional quality and serving as the first line of support for student concerns.
Leadership and Management
- Act as chief advocate for public safety programs and present a positive image of the division and College to both internal and external stakeholders
- Collaborate with advisory boards to ensure contemporary program offerings
- Assess program offerings and utilize labor market data to align with labor market needs and stated outcomes
- Develop recruiting and marketing plans in consultation with the Vice President of Career and Workforce Development and the marketing/ communications department
- Supervise and evaluate faculty and staff
- Recruit, hire, orient, and mentor adjunct and full-time faculty and instructional staff
- Participate in developing recommendations for the department budget, including forecasting anticipated budgetary needs for staffing, equipment, and supplies; monitor department expenditures
Curriculum and Teaching
- Promote excellence in learning by blending student-centered pedagogical best practices with industry-standard compliance and safety protocols
- Design and coordinate a student-centered course schedule that utilizes proactive, innovative options to accommodate both traditional students and the incumbent workforce
- Provide leadership in program review and student learning outcomes assessment
- Annually update and assess program to meet needs of students and industry partners
- Coordinate the development and implementation of new courses, ensuring they meet rigorous academic sequencing while addressing emerging industry skill gap
- Maintain teaching readiness across multiple campus and community locations to ensure programs are accessible to a diverse range of learners and regional partners

- Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President and Vice President of Career and Workforce Development
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree public safety or related field from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
- Minimum of one year of administrative or supervisory experience
- Two academic years of post-secondary teaching OR five years of full-time professional experience in specific agencies (Fire, Law Enforcement, Corrections, or EMS )
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Working knowledge/utilization of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software applications
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in education, public safety or related field from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
- Full-time experience with programmatic supervision at the Chair, Program Coordinator, Director, or an equivalent level of responsibility
- Relevant experience in interacting with regulatory bodies
- Familiarity with a course management system, such as Canvas
- Experience in a regional and programmatic accreditation process i.e., SACSCOC , CoEMSP
- Understanding of class scheduling, with evidence of the ability to create proactive and innovative class scheduling options
- Experience building off-campus partnerships and collaborations that enhance the student experience and benefit the institution
- Involvement in goal setting and strategic planning
