Job summary

Wayne County Public Schools in North Carolina seeks a DeafBlind Intervener to provide one-to-one support for students who are deafblind, facilitating communication and access to information and activities.

The intervener collaborates with teachers, therapists and families, using ASL, TASL, ProTactile methods, object/picture symbols, Braille and devices to promote independence and safety in school and community settings.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Completion of an approved DeafBlind Intervener training program or willingness to obtain certification.
• Knowledge of deafblindness and its impact on communication, learning, and access.
• Experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL); tactile signing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one intervention services for individuals with combined vision and hearing loss.
• Support communication using ASL, TASL, ProTactile methods, object/picture symbols, Braille and devices.
• Interpret environmental information and provide access to visual and auditory events.
• Assist with orientation and mobility in collaboration with specialists.
• Support development of independence, self-determination, and decision-making.
• Encourage participation in classroom instruction and social interactions.
• Modify materials and learning environments to increase accessibility.
• Maintain documentation of student progress and daily activities.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists and families to implement IEPs and intervention strategies.
• Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, training and professional development.
