Job description

Position Summary

The Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare ( AMPATH ) is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of patients living in western Kenya. The position of the Associate Site Director, Population Health and Primary Care will support the AMPATH's role in partnering with national, county and local governments to implement innovative models of health service delivery, build the capacity of the health workforce, and conduct evaluations that help inform health policy. This individual will work with the IU Center for Global Health Equity, AMPATH Consortium institutions, Moi University, and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital ( MTRH ) to help coordinate community engagement and will serve as a counterpart to the AMPATH Executive Director of Care and Deputy Executive Director for Population Health in order to coordinate, communicate, and support the AMPATH Kenya vision. This will include collaboration between a number of Principal Investigators, Chiefs of Party of USAID - PEPFAR supported HIV projects, and county Ministry of Health leaders, direct co-oversight over a portfolio of care/service grants, and leadership to pursue future funding opportunities. Finally, this position will work closely with the education and research programs to ensure integration and translation of opportunities and output.

This appointment will be in the Indiana University School of Medicine in the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Disease and Global Health and Department of Pediatrics.

Report to: Director of the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Disease and Global Health and AMPATH Kenya Executive Site Director.

The responsibilities of this position will include:

Programmatic Leadership & Management (Service)

• Working closely with the AMPATH Consortium Executive Site Director in Kenya, the AMPATH Executive Director of Care and the Deputy Executive Director for Population Health, uphold and nurture the vision of AMPATH's population health approach and nurture existing relationships and foster new professional relationships between projects, institutions, and leaders of the various care programs operating under the AMPATH Care umbrella with a particular focus on those operating within the counties.

• Support the development and implementation of AMPATH's strategic plans for improving public sector community and county facility based service delivery

• Guide AMPATH Consortium leaders and faculty as they engage with AMPATH's efforts to improve public sector community and county facility based service delivery to ensure collaboration, integration and sustainability

• Serve as PI and co-manage budgets and reporting for designated service delivery grants supporting AMPATH's population health and primary care approach

• Seek out and lead the writing of future funding opportunities that support the goals and future direction of AMPATH's population health and primary care vision, foster donor relationships and communication by working with the IU Center for Global Health Equity ( IUCGHE ) development team, and serve as a consortium spokesperson for AMPATH Kenya Care efforts

Engage with county Ministries of Health, and the new Government of Kenya Social Health Insurance Fund, and USAID leadership and cultivate those relationships

• Support and incorporate quality improvement principles into the population health and primary care initiatives and support efforts to establish strong data systems and an integrated approach to monitoring and evaluation.

• Disseminate knowledge, best practices, and lessons learned from AMPATH Population Health and Primary Care initiatives Care initiatives through scholarship (below) and through participation in various forums ( AMPATH Global, AMPATH Consortium meetings)

• Participate in international and national conferences, meetings, policy forums, learning initiatives and advocacy for bidirectional information sharing

AMPATH Consortium Administrative Leadership (Administration)

• Serve as an alternate member of the AMPATH Kenya executive committee and the executive subcommittee and work closely with the Executive Site Director to develop and implement strategic plans for the AMPATH Consortium.

• Participate in AMPATH Kenya and AMPATH Global calls that are identified as relevant to this position's function and collaborate/facilitate/co-lead with the AMPATH Kenya Executive Director Care and Associate Program Manager of Population Health on multi-country proposals that overlap with the population and primary care vision.

• Assist in hosting high-level visitors to AMPATH Kenya

• In coordination with the IUCGHE and its development and communications teams, represent IU's activities as needed for philanthropic efforts.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Participate as a visiting faculty member within the department of Pediatrics at MU School of Medicine ( MUSM ), including but not limited to practicing medicine and engaging in the delivery of clinical services. Clinical service can be tailored to the individual's desire and expertise.

• Provide technical guidance and support development and implementation of clinical guidelines as needed

• Up to 4-6 weeks per year as pediatric hospitalist at Indiana University facilities around Indianapolis

Education and Mentorship Responsibilities

• Participate in educational activities expected of all visiting faculty at MUSM as directed by the relevant MU head of department

• Serve as a faculty member and meet education expectations within the selected division of an IU School of Medicine department

• Identify and foster development of future leaders within Moi University, MTRH and the AMPATH Consortium who participate in the AMPATH Population Health and Primary Care

• Provide mentorship to clinical officers, nurses and medical officers working within the MOH and AMPATH -supported care efforts

Scholarly activity

• Develop a portfolio of scholarly activity related to population health, which includes dissemination of lessons learned through the AMPATH Population Health Program through presentations and publications

• Co-lead development and maintenance of an infrastructure in Population Health that will support program evaluation as well as dissemination and implementation research

• Participate in the relevant A MPATH working groups

• Serve on the publications review committee

Basic Qualifications

Qualifications

• MD/DO/DrPH/PhD degree

• 3 or more years of global health or relevant health systems experience

• Extensive knowledge of primary care and population health in LMICs

• Commitment to health equity, social justice and the treatment of all persons with respect

• Preference for health systems experience in an under-served/resourced global setting

Working Environment

• The individual is expected to live in Eldoret, Kenya at least 80% of the time assuming legal and institutional permissions allow.

• Office space and access to office equipment (printers, photocopying) will be provided

• Will be required to attend virtual meetings that occur across various time zones

• Work in Kenya is expected to be in the MTRH /MU/Pop Health working spaces with time spent physically present within the team offices to improve interpersonal connections
