Job summary

NC State University in Raleigh, NC is seeking a Journey Utilities Plant Operator (Dayshift) to operate the central utility systems that provide electricity, steam, hot water, and chilled water across campus. The role requires basic certification and on-site work in a large university utility environment.

You will monitor equipment, troubleshoot issues, and maintain safe, efficient operations while working a 12-hour shift (6:00 AM–6:00 PM) 3–4 days a week.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with 1 year related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Maintains required certification(s).
• Experience with steam production and central plant operations is preferred.
• Valid NC Driver's License is required within 60 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor central utility systems providing electricity, steam, hot water, and chilled water across campus.
• Assist in controlling and monitoring steam boilers, chillers, cogeneration equipment, and auxiliary systems.
• Conduct real-time monitoring and adjust operations to ensure safe, efficient performance.
• Inspect plant equipment such as pumps, filters, and cooling towers.
• Work under supervision to optimize plant performance and address operational challenges.
• Support operation of Cogeneration Facilities to meet campus energy needs.
• Lift and transport materials up to 60 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers and follow instructions.
