Job Description

Reports To: Principal

Terms of Employment: 10 Month Position (As Needed)

Nature of Work: The Daycare/Pre‑K Substitute provides safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate care and instruction to preschool‑aged children in the absence of the regular Daycare/Pre‑K. This position ensures continuity of planned learning activities, maintains established classroom routines, and supports children’s academic, social, and emotional development. The substitute works closely with school staff to implement lesson plans, supervise students in all settings, provide one‑on‑one or small group assistance, and maintain a clean, organized learning environment. Duties also include monitoring safety and behavior, assisting with personal care needs, and promoting positive interactions among children.

Qualifications and Licensure
  • High School Diploma or GED or higher education.
  • Experience in early childhood or classroom setting, preferred.
  • Must meet the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education background qualification standards prior to employment and every five years thereafter.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
Duties and Responsibilities
  • General knowledge of daily routines of the classroom.
  • General knowledge of student handbook rules.
  • General knowledge of procedures to follow in the event of an emergency
  • Implement planned lessons and activities as provided by the regular teacher.
  • Maintain classroom routines and follow all district and school policies and procedures.
  • Constantly monitor the safety and well being of students, both indoors and out doors.
  • Encourage positive self‑esteem, independence, and cooperative play among children.
  • Provide one‑on‑one and small group instruction to reinforce skills and concepts using materials and information provided by the regular teacher.
  • Assist students with personal care needs (feeding, toileting, hygiene) and perform medical procedures once trained.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, meals, outdoor play, and other school events.
  • Maintain classroom order using positive behavior management strategies and document incidents as required.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, staff, and administrators while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe classroom environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the school administrator.
Physical Requirements (if applicable)
  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 40 pounds of force.
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires standing, walking stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting.
  • Work has standard vision requirements.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and operating machines.
  • Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

  • Must be dependable and prompt.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to maintain order in the classroom.
  • Ability to administer teacher lesson plans.
  • Ability to ensure a safe and healthful environment.
