Job summary

PlanetScale is seeking a Customer Support Engineer to help developers and businesses get the most out of PlanetScale, resolve issues quickly, and build the support function that helps us scale.

You will advise and handle support requests, debug issues, and help customers understand how to use PlanetScale, including queries, schema changes, and production workflows. You will create, improve, and share documentation and playbooks to reduce friction and improve customer outcomes.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting production applications, databases, developer tools, infrastructure, or other technical products.
• Working knowledge of SQL, preferably MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
• Strong debugging skills and the ability to reason through application and database behavior.
• Programming experience with reading unfamiliar code to understand issues.
• Experience with ORMs, database connectors, or application deployment patterns.
• Openness to learn new languages/frameworks and customer environments.
• Clear written and verbal communication; customer empathy.

Responsibilities

• Advise and handle support requests from customers and developers on the PlanetScale platform.
• Respond to, debug, and resolve customer issues through tickets, Slack, and other channels.
• Help customers understand how to use PlanetScale, including queries, schema changes, and production workflows.
• Create and improve internal/external docs, playbooks, and troubleshooting guides.
• Identify product gaps and work with Engineering to prioritize improvements.
• Contribute to systems, processes, and practices for scalable developer-focused support.
• Communicate clearly, staying empathetic while enabling customers to become self-sufficient.
