University of Iowa is seeking a Clinical Research Data Analyst to extract, integrate, analyze, and manage complex clinical and research data from EHR sources and the Enterprise Data Warehouse for Research (EDW4R).
You will collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and data teams to translate questions into data solutions, develop dashboards, and support data workflows in a hybrid work setting within Iowa.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years working with healthcare, clinical, biomedical, or research data.
- Experience querying and analyzing data using SQL or related databases.
- Experience with EHR data and healthcare terminology systems.
- Understanding healthcare data structures and coding systems (ICD, CPT, LOINC, SNOMED).
- Ability to manage multiple projects in collaborative environments.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

- Collaborate with researchers to define data requirements, cohorts, and reporting specs.

The Clinical Research Data Analyst supports biomedical and translational research through the extraction, integration, analysis, and management of complex clinical and research data. This position works closely with researchers, clinicians, data teams, and institutional stakeholders to translate research questions into actionable data solutions using electronic health record (EHR) and related healthcare data sources.
The successful candidate will serve as a key contributor supporting the Enterprise Data Warehouse for Research (EDW4R) and other research data platforms. Responsibilities include data querying, cohort identification, data validation, data integration, reporting, and support for research data workflows. The position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary research environments.
This role is not entry level and requires prior experience working with healthcare or biomedical data, including familiarity with EHR systems and healthcare data structures. The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, collaborative, adaptable, and capable of independently solving complex data problems in support of clinical and translational research initiatives.
- Utilize SQL and related database technologies to extract, transform, validate, and analyze clinical and research data from the Enterprise Data Warehouse for Research (EDW4R) and related systems

The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in 2007 to support the work of investigators involved in clinical and translational science. Our mission is to accelerate translational science through programs to develop the translational workforce, to promote engagement of community members and other stakeholders, to promote research integration across the lifespan, and to catalyze innovative clinical and translational research. This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Remote work must be performed within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. - Minimum of 3 years of professional experience working with healthcare, clinical, biomedical, or research data
- Experience querying and analyzing data using SQL or related database technologies
- Experience working with electronic health record (EHR) data and healthcare terminology systems
- Understanding of healthcare data structures, clinical workflows, and healthcare coding systems (ICD, CPT, LOINC, SNOMED, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in collaborative environments
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across interdisciplinary teams
- Experience working with Epic, including Clarity, Caboodle, or related reporting databases
- Epic Certifications: Clarity, Caboodle
- Experience supporting clinical, translational, or academic research initiatives
- Familiarity with research data warehouses and large-scale healthcare datasets
- Experience using Python, R, SAS, or similar tools for data analysis or automation
- Familiarity with healthcare interoperability and data exchange standards such as HL7 or FHIR
- Experience with data visualization and reporting tools such as Tableau or Power BI
- Experience working within academic healthcare or CTSA-supported environments
- Familiarity with HIPAA, data governance, and research compliance practices
