Job summary

Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) is seeking a Database Administrator to maintain and optimize enterprise databases across Windows, UNIX, and Linux environments. The role supports roughly 500 databases, handles backups, high availability, and performance tuning, and participates in a 24/7 on-call rotation.

The candidate will create SQL, maintain documentation, and automate routine tasks to improve efficiency, with a focus on reliability and data protection in a mission-driven utility setting.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide support for enterprise databases and business systems (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL).
  • Install, secure, monitor performance, back up, enable high availability, troubleshoot, and perform refreshes.
  • Maintain documentation and automate routine tasks to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call coverage rotation and align solutions with KUB architecture.

Work Hours: 40+ hours / week: M - F

About the Role: Provide support for KUB's enterprise databases and business systems, including commercial and custom applications. This role manages the installation, security, performance, backups, high availability, troubleshooting, and refreshes of Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL databases across Windows, UNIX, and Linux environments. The DBA team ensures reliability, availability, and data protection while supporting approximately 500 databases and participating in 24/7 on-call coverage rotation. Responsibilities also include creating SQL, maintaining documentation, and automating routine tasks to improve efficiency and consistency. The role requires familiarity with evolving technology trends, basic OS administration skills, and the ability to design and implement solutions that align with KUB's architecture.

Qualifications
Physical Requirements:

Sedentary work; exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time in normal office conditions, but does involve walking or standing outside periodically for inspections, customer calls, etc. Work requires no unusual physical demands. Physical demands for a specific position within this classification may vary and / or exceed those demands described above.

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent

Strong communication, interpersonal, analytical, and project management skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office

Has or is working toward certification in Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and/or Azure

Valid driver's license

Preferred Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in related field of IT

Minimum of one (1) year experience in database administration

Three (3) or more years' experience working in an IT related field

Strong analytical, leadership, coaching, and teamwork skills
