Data Scientist, Part Time, Term. Molecular Physiology and Biophysics

The Data Scientist (part‑time, term position) will work in the Wankowicz lab (wankowiczlab.com) at Vanderbilt University's Center for AI in Protein Dynamics and the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics. This work will involve developing machine learning and bioinformatic algorithms and approaches towards understanding conformational entropy in structures.

The Wankowicz lab (wankowiczlab.com) aims to elucidate the role of entropy in substrate specificity and catalysis, striving to provide a comprehensive thermodynamic understanding of enzyme function. The lab develops innovative computational algorithms to create conformational ensemble models. This position will be involved in the computational side of the lab, focusing on using bioinformatics to understand the role of entropy in protein function.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Design, analyze, and present large structural bioinformatic pipelines
• Develop and benchmark algorithms for conformational ensemble modeling
• Collaborate with domain scientists to integrate outputs with experimental pipelines and refine hypotheses in an iterative design–test–learn loop

Qualifications

• MS or PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Computational Chemistry, or related field.
• Experience with machine learning
• Strong background in structural biology and/or statistical mechanics
• Proven ability to build and debug large-scale ML systems in Python
• Experience with building large bioinformatic pipelines
• Strong skills in balancing multiple projects
