Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) is seeking a Data Scientist II, Forward Market Solutions to develop analytics, insights, and AI-driven tools that support forward market operations. You will partner with engineers and analysts to scale data-driven applications and improve operational awareness and decision-making.

The role focuses on modernizing Market Operations through advanced analytics, visualization, and AI, delivering measurable value while collaborating with agile teams.

• Bachelor's or advanced degree in a technical field.
• Proficiency programming with Python or R.
• Familiarity with ML, cloud analytics, or AI-driven solutions.
• Experience translating enterprise data into clear business insights.
• Strong collaboration and communication in cross-functional teams.
• 2+ years in predictive modeling, data prep, visualization, segmentation, NLP, or graph databases.

About the Role

MISO is seeking a Data Scientist II, Forward Market Solutions to help drive analytics, insights, and innovative solutions that support our forward markets. In this role, you'll partner with engineers, operators, analysts, and fellow data scientists to develop data-driven tools and applications that improve operational awareness, optimize market outcomes, and support strategic decision-making.

You will play a key role in modernizing Market Operations by leveraging advanced analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and interactive data visualization. Your work will help scale processes, uncover meaningful insights, and address complex challenges facing the energy industry.

What You'll Do

As a Data Scientist II, Forward Market Solutions, you will:

• Develop and support data-driven solutions that enhance market operations and business decision-making.
• Apply advanced analytics, machine learning, AI, and visualization techniques to solve complex operational challenges.
• Design and build interactive applications and analytical tools that empower users to explore data and generate insights.
• Collaborate with Agile teams and enterprise data analytics partners to ensure alignment with organizational goals and best practices.
• Analyze drivers of Market Funding Efficiency (MFE) performance and develop predictive insights related to funding and congestion management.
• Partner with Market Administration stakeholders to identify opportunities for improving Excess Congestion Funding (ECF) and Financial Transmission Rights (FTR) outcomes.
• Evaluate transmission and generation outage data to identify trends and opportunities for improving market performance.
• Represent Market Administration in cross-functional initiatives, ensuring business requirements and operational needs are reflected in solution designs.
• Communicate findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.

Within your first year, you will:

• Gain a strong understanding of MISO's Forward Market Solutions tools, applications, and market operations processes.
• Develop expertise in the Market Funding Efficiency (MFE) metric and the key drivers that influence market outcomes.
• Build trusted relationships with Agile teams, business partners, and Market Operations stakeholders.
• Deliver data-driven insights and solutions that improve operational awareness, reduce risk, and create measurable value for the organization.
• Contribute to MISO's growing use of AI, advanced analytics, and modern tools to support evolving business needs.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Data Science, Data Analytics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical field.
• Proficiency programming with Python or R.
• Familiarity with machine learning, cloud-based analytics, or AI-driven solutions.
• Experience translating Complex Enterprise data into clear business insights.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills in cross-functional environments.
• 2+ years of Professional experience in at least two of the following areas:
  • Predictive modeling and Pattern recognition
  • Data preparation and cleansing
  • Data visualization and Statistical Models
  • Segmentation analysis
  • Natural language processing (NLP)
  • Graph databases

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the energy, utilities, or power markets industry.

The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $90,000.00 – $115,000.00 USD annually. Base salary range for this position is included in accordance with requirements of various state/local pay transparency legislation. Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individual competencies, education/professional certifications, and qualifications/experience.

Position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met. At MISO we offer a comprehensive benefits package, including 401k, vacation, sick and safe time, available on your first day of employment.
