Job summary

MISO is seeking a Senior Data Scientist – Market Evaluation to advance statistical and economic analyses of market operations, pricing, demand, and design. Ideal candidates have 8+ years of experience in data science or economics, strong Python/R/SAS skills, and expertise in ML frameworks and visualization tools.

Qualifications

• Two Bachelor's degrees: Economics and Data Science (required).
• 8+ years of relevant data science, analytics, or economics experience (required).
• Strong programming skills with Python, R, SAS, EViews, or VBA.
• Experience with ML/AI predictive analytics including regression, forecasting, and time-series.
• Familiarity with ML frameworks: NumPy, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn.
• Experience creating dashboards with Power BI, Tableau, Plotly, or Streamlit.
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) and Git.
• Solid knowledge of SQL, NoSQL, ETL processes, and data warehousing.

Job description

In one year as our Senior Data Scientist – Market Evaluation, you will know you were successful if you:

• Use statistical, economic, and advanced data analysis to uncover meaningful patterns in market operations, participant activity, pricing, supply and demand, market anomalies, and market design.
• Develop forward-looking and predictive analytics that help identify emerging market trends, behaviors, and potential issues.
• Build automated alerts, dashboards, and analytical tools that flag unusual market outcomes and make complex information easier to understand and act upon.
• Lead end-to-end data science projects – from defining the problem and project scope through development, implementation, and delivery.
• Investigate specific market outcomes and operational events using data queries, MISO systems, and simulation tools to identify root causes and evaluate potential scenarios.

• You contribute to team goals, create useful insights, ask relevant questions, and help identify opportunities to improve market performance

We are looking for someone with:

• A Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Economics, Operations Research, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
• At least eight (8) years of relevant experience working with data science, advanced analytics, economic analysis, or related disciplines.
• Strong programming and analytical experience using tools such as Python, R, SAS, EViews, or VBA.
• Experience developing machine learning and AI-driven predictive analytics, which may include regression and forecasting, classification and clustering, time-series forecasting, deep learning, natural language processing, and large language models.
• Experience with common data science and machine learning frameworks such as NumPy, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn.
• Experience creating dashboards and data visualization solutions using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Plotly, or Streamlit.
• Experience working with cloud platforms and modern software engineering practices, including Azure, AWS, GCP, and Git.
• Strong knowledge of data management and data engineering, including SQL, NoSQL, ETL processes, and data warehousing.

Even better if you have experience with energy market forecasting and analysis, power system operations, statistical or econometric analysis, electricity market design, or related software development. Previous experience with a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO), Independent System Operator (ISO), utility, or other energy market participant would be especially valuable.

The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $119,000-$144,000 USD annually. Base salary range for this position is included in accordance with requirements of various state/local pay transparency legislation. Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individual competencies, education/professional certifications, and qualifications/experience.
