Job summary

Pittsburgh Pirates, a storied MLB franchise, are seeking a Data Scientist to transform baseball data into actionable insights that drive acquisition, development, and on-field decisions.

You will work with data scientists, analysts, and software engineers across Baseball R&D and Baseball Operations to translate models into decision tools for scouts, coaches, and front office stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, CS, Math, Econ, ML, Biomechanics).
• Experience applying statistical/machine learning tools to real-world problems.
• Proficiency in Python or R for data analysis and modeling.
• Ability to communicate complex quantitative concepts clearly (written and verbal).
• Experience collaborating on data science projects.
• Authorized to work lawfully in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, validate, and deploy statistical and ML models to support baseball operations (scouting, acquisitions, development, on-field decisions).
• Build tools and visualizations to translate data and model results into insights for coaches and decision-makers.
• Communicate results clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Partner with data engineers to create scalable data pipelines and ensure data quality.
• Stay updated on new data sources and analytical methods; iterate experiments.
• Help the organization experiment, learn, and iterate.
