Division/Program Summary

The Division of Disease Control's mission is to safeguard the health of New Yorkers through identification, surveillance, treatment, control, and prevention of infectious diseases. The NYC Public Health Laboratory (PHL) is one of the largest local public health laboratories in the United States, providing clinical and environmental testing services. PHL is committed to supporting public health through quality laboratory testing that aligns with DOHMH priorities and community partnerships.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Chiefs of Bioinformatics and Data units, and collaborating with a team of analysts, your role will focus on data management within and outside the Bureau. You will meet with your manager to understand data needs, participate in community of practice meetings, and develop solutions to optimize data organization, storage, retrieval, and analysis, including pathogen genomics data.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Support onboarding and data management for bioinformatic analysis of pathogens.
  2. Manage packaging, publishing, and traceability of laboratory data to repositories like NCBI and NYC Open Data.
  3. Facilitate secure data sharing with partners within and outside the agency.
  4. Maintain meta-data datasets for laboratory test results, including genomic data, through LIS or other systems.
  5. Conduct routine quality assessments.
  6. Implement analytical tools, automation, and visualization methods for reporting and investigations.
  7. Analyze data, prepare reports, and assist in research coordination.
  8. Identify and troubleshoot data issues, initiating corrective actions.
  9. Participate in writing manuscripts based on data analyses.
Preferred Skills
  • MS or PhD in data analytics, informatics, bioinformatics, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in Bash scripting, R, Python, SQL.
  • Knowledge of high throughput sequencing.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
