Division/Program Summary

The Division of Disease Control aims to protect NYC residents by managing infectious diseases through surveillance, treatment, and prevention. The NYC Public Health Laboratory (PHL) is one of the largest local public health labs in the U.S., providing clinical and environmental testing to support public health initiatives.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Chiefs of Bioinformatics and Data units, and collaborating with bioinformatics and data analysts, your role will focus on data management within and outside the Bureau. You will engage with your manager to understand data needs, participate in data standards communities, and develop solutions for data organization, storage, retrieval, and analysis, including pathogen genomics data.

Key Responsibilities

1. Support onboarding and data management for bioinformatic analysis of pathogens.
2. Manage data packaging, publishing, and traceability to repositories like NCBI and NYC Open Data.
3. Handle data sharing with internal and external partners securely.
4. Maintain metadata datasets for laboratory results, including genomic data, using LIS or other systems.
5. Conduct quality assessments for performance measures.
6. Implement analytical tools, automation, and visualization for reporting and investigations.
7. Analyze data, prepare reports, and assist research efforts.
8. Troubleshoot issues and initiate corrective actions.
9. Participate in writing scientific manuscripts based on data analyses.

Preferred Skills

• MS or PhD in data analytics, informatics, bioinformatics, or related fields.
• Proficiency in Bash, R, Python, SQL.
• Knowledge of high throughput sequencing.
• Strong project management skills.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
