Job summary

Western National Insurance in Edina, MN is seeking a Data Engineering Intern to join the Data & Integrations team as part of the Summer 2027 Internship Program. You will gain hands-on experience supporting systems that turn business data into useful information while working with experienced data engineers and business partners.

The internship covers enterprise data warehousing concepts, ETL/ELT workflows, data quality and security practices, and Agile delivery.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a degree, certificate, or coursework in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, or a related field.
• A passion for technology with an interest in analyzing and improving data.
• Basic experience with SQL and relational databases through coursework, projects, employment, or personal learning.
• Exposure to Python or another scripting language.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with an interest in understanding systems and processes.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for both technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Willingness to ask questions and collaborate effectively.
• Ability to pay close attention to detail when working with data, code, and documentation.
• Familiarity with Agile software development, source control tools like Git or GitLab, or ETL/ELT technologies such as SSIS or Snowflake is preferred but not required.
• Exposure to DevOps concepts, CI/CD processes, or tools like Docker or Jenkins is a plus.
• Two years of college or equivalent relevant experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Work with data technologies including SQL Server, SSIS, Snowflake, Python, and related tools for data warehousing and automation.
• Develop and test enhancements to data applications and ETL/ELT workflows.
• Troubleshoot data integration and EDW issues by analyzing data and reviewing code.
• Write clear, maintainable code and participate in reviews and testing.
• Contribute to Agile activities such as backlog refinement and planning.
• Identify opportunities to improve data processes, documentation, automation, and team efficiency.
• Create and maintain technical documentation for learning, onboarding, and production releases.
• Follow data security, privacy, quality, and change-management practices in an insurance environment.
• Complete special projects as assigned.
