Job summary

GRAIL, based in RTP, North Carolina, is seeking a Data Engineer for the Operational Technology team to own end-to-end data ingestion from lab instruments to analytics and AI systems. This on-site role involves building reliable pipelines that move data from the lab floor to analytics platforms, with on-call rotations and occasional weekend support.

You will work with systems engineers, lab operations, and data scientists, applying SQL, Python, ETL/ELT, and data modeling to deliver trustworthy

Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Data Science, Life Sciences, Physics or similar field.
• 1+ year of relevant professional or internship experience in data engineering or related field.
• Proficiency in SQL and working knowledge of programming languages such as Python, Rust, or C++.
• Understanding of ETL/ELT pipelines and relational databases.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality and reliability.
• Ability to collaborate in cross-functional teams and adapt in fast-paced, regulated environments.
• Analytical mindset and problem-solving approach.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain data pipelines ingesting data from lab instruments, automation systems, sequencers, and databases.
• Support analytics, reporting, and AI systems with clean, reliable datasets and timely data extracts.
• Develop and optimize SQL and transformation logic to model raw production data into well-structured datasets.
• Create data models and dashboards for operational monitoring and governance.
• Implement data validation, testing, and monitoring to detect data issues early.
• Document pipelines and data models to support reproducibility and regulatory compliance (ISO, CLIA, CAP, NYS, GMP, FDA).
• Collaborate with systems engineers, lab operations, data scientists, and automation engineers.
