The Data Center Operations group, part of the University of Alaska’s Office of Information Technology (OIT), is seeking a Data Center Student Assistant to support Operations staff.

As a Data Center Student Assistant, you will work alongside and learn from experienced IT professionals to help monitor the UA System Office’s statewide computer network, enterprise applications, hosted computer systems, and data center infrastructure. You will assist the on-duty Data Center Technicians in maintaining the security of the state-of-the-art Butrovich Data Center (BDC), monitoring video surveillance, performing hardware installations, and updating power distribution documentation. This role provides hands-on experience in a 24x7x365 environment, making it an excellent opportunity to build a solid foundation in enterprise IT while accommodating your academic schedule.

To thrive in this role, you should be a customer-oriented and adaptable individual with strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail. You should be comfortable working with hardware, cables, and specialized tools, as well as troubleshooting computer-related issues. A strong candidate will have knowledge of basic electronic logic, Windows and Mac operating systems, and microcomputer functionality. The ability to follow detailed technical instructions, use power tools to fabricate and install server hardware, and the ability to work with and around high voltage equipment is essential. Additionally, effective communication and a friendly demeanor are key to assisting colleagues and customers, even in occasionally stressful situations. Physical ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds is also required. An eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies will ensure success in this role.

We welcome applicants who are eager to contribute their skills to a collaborative and innovative environment. If you thrive in a hands-on role and enjoy problem-solving, we encourage you to apply!
