Data Center Engineers (Design & Infrastructure - Multi-Discipline)
Multiple Locations: Houston, TX, Washington, DC
Company: Fortune 500 Energy Company
Role Overview
We are looking for Data Center Engineers to play a critical role in the conceptualization, design oversight, and optimization of critical infrastructure systems that keep our data centers running reliably, efficiently, and sustainably.
These roles bridge the gap between high-level building architecture and the complex mechanical, cooling, and piping networks required to support next-generation compute loads. You will collaborate with cross-functional design, construction, and operations teams to review schematics, enforce engineering standards, and drive innovation in thermal management and infrastructure resilience.
Responsibilities
Building Design & Spatial Planning
- Architectural & Structural Collaboration: Partner with structural engineers and architects to define spatial requirements, floor loading capacities, and structural zoning for heavy mechanical equipment (e.g., chillers, cooling towers, pumps).
- Egress & Safety Design: Ensure data hall and mechanical gallery layouts comply with local building codes, life safety requirements, NFPA standards, and physical security boundaries.
- Scalability Planning: Design modular, scalable infrastructure frameworks that allow for seamless concurrent maintainability and future capacity expansions without disrupting live environments.
Cooling & HVAC Systems
- Thermal Management Design: Develop and evaluate cooling topologies appropriate for varying high-density environments, including CRAH/CRAC units, Hot/Cold Aisle Containment, Chilled Water Loops, Evaporative Cooling, and Direct-to-Chip Liquid Cooling.
- Psychrometric & Airflow Optimization: Utilize Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to evaluate data hall airflow patterns, eliminate hot spots, and maximize economizer hours.
- Environmental Control: Design and monitor precise HVAC control strategies for humidity, filtration, and pressurization within the white space and support galleries.
Hydronic & Piping Schematics
- Schematic Development: Author, review, and approve critical mechanical diagrams, including Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), piping schematics, and flow diagrams for condenser and chilled water systems.
- Hydronic Calculation: Perform or validate hydraulic calculations for pump sizing, pipe friction losses, thermal expansion, water hammer mitigation, and system volume requirements.
- Redundancy & Topology Verification: Ensure piping architecture meets strict uptime standards (e.g., Tier III/IV or N+1/2N topologies) with proper isolation valve placement for concurrent maintenance.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Minimum of 4–6+ years of direct experience in the design, engineering, or operation of mission-critical facilities (Data Centers, Cleanrooms, or High-Tech Manufacturing).
Technical Skills
- Software Proficiency: Advanced capability with AutoCAD, Revit (BIM), and CFD modeling tools (e.g., 6SigmaRoom, Future Facilities).
- Standards & Codes: Deep working knowledge of ASHRAE TC 9.9 (Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments), ASME piping codes, NFPA standards, and local building/mechanical codes.
- Systems Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of central plant designs, variable speed pumping, water treatment regimes, and Building Management Systems (BMS/EPMS) sequences of operation.
