Job description

Los Angeles, CA - Hybrid or Remote for Exceptional Candidates

Salary: $120,000-$180,000 | Full-Time

About The Opportunity

A growing technology-driven shipping insurance organization provides coverage for goods in transit, from everyday merchandise to high-value items such as jewelry, precious metals, trading cards, and fine art. Its technology platform, insurance API, and claims system generate valuable data across quoting, policies, claims, carrier performance, and shipping activity.

The organization is seeking a hands-on Data & Analytics Lead to build its data infrastructure from the ground up. Reporting to the Founder & CEO and collaborating with technology leadership, you will establish the data foundation, create trusted reporting, and develop tools that help teams make better business decisions. This is an opportunity to shape the data strategy while remaining deeply involved in SQL, data modeling, pipelines, and implementation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain a data warehouse or lake integrating internal systems, including policy, claims, quoting, and transportation management, with external carrier feeds, partner APIs, and performance data.
  • Develop reliable data pipelines, transformations, data models, and documented workflows.
  • Establish consistent, governed metrics and a self-service reporting environment using Power BI and related tools.
  • Deliver data insights directly into internal applications and claims systems through embedded reporting or APIs.
  • Develop alerts to identify emerging loss trends by carrier, shipping lane, commodity, and partner.
  • Analyze claims, loss frequency, severity, and other performance metrics to help teams identify risks earlier.
  • Direct offshore analysts and engineers through clear specifications, quality reviews, and delivery standards.
  • Implement data security controls, including access restrictions, masking, environment separation, and audit trails, while supporting SOC 2 compliance.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, claims, operations, and technology teams to prioritize projects and improve data accessibility.
Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience building a data warehouse or lake, including data ingestion, transformation, orchestration, and modeling.
  • Experience integrating internal business systems with external data sources, vendor feeds, or partner APIs.
  • Proven ability to develop governed metrics, semantic layers, certified datasets, and row-level security.
  • Experience delivering data through applications, embedded reporting, or APIs-not just BI dashboards.
  • Strong SQL skills and working knowledge of Python, with the ability to code regularly.
  • Experience directing contractors or offshore teams and reviewing deliverables for quality and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of data security, access controls, sensitive-data handling, and audit requirements.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize foundational work in a developing data environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in insurance, shipping, logistics, parcel delivery, or supply chain.
  • Microsoft Azure, Azure SQL, Power BI, or Fabric experience. Snow--flake, BigQuery, and Databricks experience may also be relevant.
  • Exposure to fraud detection or predictive modeling is a plus but not required.
Compensation & Work Location
  • Base salary: $120,000-$180,000, depending on experience and location.
  • Location: Los Angeles, CA, with a hybrid schedule and approximately monthly in-office collaboration.
  • Southern California candidates are strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional remote candidates may be considered, with quarterly onsite visits and substantial overlap with Pacific time business hours. Travel for required onsite visits is covered.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, age, color, sex (including pregnancy), religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, military status, genetic information, or any other status protected by applicable laws or regulations.
