What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The DARHT Engineering, Operations, and Physics Group (J-6) is looking for an Engineered Systems Tec to join the Mechanical Systems Design and Engineering Team. J-6 provides state-of-the-art accelerator, pulsed power, beam-target, and radiographic physics capabilities in support of LANL's hydrodynamic test mission. Core responsibilities of the Mechanical and Engineering Team include: (a) troubleshooting, maintaining, and upgrading of the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) accelerator mechanical systems (water, glycol, vacuum, mechanical alignment, etc.), and (b) designing, modeling, developing, and implementing new mechanical systems to support the DARHT accelerators.

J-6 provides excellence in accelerator research and development for x-ray flash radiography and operates both axes of the DARHT facility. J-6 is a dynamic team embarking on a new era in advanced hydrotesting through the newly developed DARHT Capability Expansion (DCX) strategy, next generation capability for DARHT and integrated weapon testing. Engineered Systems Tec 1 ($49,600 - $76,700)

As a mechanical Engineered Systems Tec 1, you will assist in the maintenance of mechanical systems and subsystems at DARHT and around the DARHT complex. You will perform technical installation and/or maintenance functions supporting engineering activities associated with a wide variety of engineering systems such as water cooling, mechanical alignment, mechanical assembly, vacuum systems, and magnets. Installs, tests, repairs, and maintains systems and equipment. Works from documentation, written or verbal instructions, schematics, rough sketches, diagrams, layouts, and plans.

Engineered Systems Tec 2 ($54,900 - $84,300)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level responsibilities may also include coordinating activities, leading small projects or work packages, developing procedures, maintaining spare parts and equipment, and providing technical recommendations for equipment repairs and upgrades.

• Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting mechanical and/or vacuum systems and/or equipment.
• Knowledge of working to a defined set of policies, practices, and procedures.
• Ability to interpret and apply knowledge and practical understanding of equipment and systems theory and principles.
• Ability to work independently and as well as collaboratively as part of a team.

Education/Experience Engineered Systems Tec 1

Position typically requires a high school diploma and a minimum 1-2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience Engineered Systems Tec 2

Position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with high-vacuum equipment.
• Experience working on pumping and pressure systems.
• Experience reading mechanical drawings.
• Strong computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, data acquisition, and plotting.
• Active DOE Q Clearance.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule

This position is full-time and onsite. The normal schedule is expected to be a day-shift schedule of 9/80s.

Position commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q

Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. New-Employment Drug Test
