Job summary

DeKalb Park District in DeKalb, IL is seeking a part-time Dance Assistant Instructor to help plan, instruct, and monitor dance classes, ensuring a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for participants.

The role requires prior dance experience and ability to work with children. CPR/AED and First Aid certifications are desired or obtainable within three months, with classes scheduled Monday afternoons/evenings and Saturday mornings.

  • Maintain accurate records, including attendance, incident reports, and other required documentation.
  • Set-up and help maintain the facility, program equipment/supplies, and dance floor.

Position Description

DEPARTMENT: Recreation

TITLE: Dance Assistant Instructor

CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

SUMMARY OF POSITION: Assist with planning, instructing, and monitoring dance classes and performances while maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for class participants.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Lead Dance Instructor and Cultural Arts & Special Events Manager

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with teaching dance program classes.
  • Establish and maintain good communication with participants, parents, other staff, and supervisor.
  • Arrive early to class to ensure that classes begin promptly.
  • Provide a high level of customer service in a professional manner.
  • Supervise participants to ensure their safety, engagement, and positive participation.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating appropriate behavior, language, and attitude at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records, including attendance, incident reports, and other required documentation.
  • Set-up and help maintain the facility, program equipment/supplies, and dance floor.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program site, including activity areas and common spaces.
  • Support risk management efforts by identifying potential hazards and following established safety procedures.
  • Provide first aid as needed.
  • Present a professional appearance and wear appropriate attire.
  • Follow all district policies, procedures, and safety guidelines, including emergency behavior management procedures.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
  • Attend meetings and in-service trainings as necessary.
  • Light janitorial duties required.
  • Be prepared to lead classes if the Lead Dance Instructor is unable to do so.
Qualifications
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
  • 16 years of age or older.
  • Previous dance experience required.
  • Previous experience teaching and/or working with children preferred.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic understanding of dance techniques and methods.
  • Ability to effectively communicate one-on-one with individuals and in a group/class setting.
  • Ability to interact with class participants, parents/guardians, and co-workers in a professional and positive manner.
  • Ability to follow directions and give clear instructions.
  • Experience, or passion for working with children.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to handle negative feedback from parents/guardians.
  • Ability to portray a professional image of the District.
Special Requirements:
  • Must commit to an entire season (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring) and be able to work Monday afternoons evenings as well as Saturday mornings.
  • Possess and maintain CPR/AED and First aid certifications or obtain within three months of employment.
