Job summary

Joby Aviation is building autonomous aircraft with a software-first DAA approach. The DAA Lead owns the capability across radar, perception, and overall architectures, guiding requirements, safety arguments, and certification strategy for multiple aircraft types.

You will define the radar’s role, performance, and verification plan, coordinating with safety, flight test, and regulators to deliver a certifiable, end-to-end solution.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in aerospace, autonomy, robotics, sensors, or a closely related field.
• Bachelor's Degree or advanced degree in related field.
• Deep, hands-on understanding of detect-and-avoid / sense-and-avoid.
• Experience reasoning across different system architectures and making principled trade-offs.
• Ability to specify and evaluate a radar (or comparable sensor) as a product owner.
• Demonstrated ability to lead across disciplines and own a capability end to end.
• Working knowledge of airspace operations, separation/right-of-way rules, and the relevant DAA standards.
• Strong systems-engineering instincts: requirements, interfaces, V&V, and trade studies.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Own DAA as a portfolio, define strategy across aircraft types.
• Architect across onboard, ground-based, and hybrid DAA architectures.
• Drive commonality and define shared DAA core across platforms.
• Set per-architecture certification and safety strategies.
• Own the DAA product vision and roadmap, balancing safety, schedule, cost and performance.
• Drive radar requirements for airborne and ground-based roles, evolve with tests.
• Lead test campaigns and validation activities across simulation, HITL, and flight tests.
• Translate regulatory requirements into engineering requirements and defend for compliance.
