Job description

Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan Mill Steel Company is a team of over 400 employees with a commitment to high-quality service. We are a unified, motivated, and empowered market driven company with a single focus to be the best. Our mission is simple, expand our operations into new territories, enhance relationships with our customers and suppliers, provide the best value available in the market, increase market share in key customer industries, develop innovative responses to customer needs, and continue to foster an environment of team involvement and empowerment.

The D365 Finance & Operations Developer will be our first in-house F&O developer, responsible for designing, developing, and supporting D365 F&O customizations and integrations using X++
This role will initially work very closely with our Microsoft implementation partner’s development team to learn the existing architecture, coding patterns, and solution structure already in place. The role will also leverage strong DevOps/SDLC expertise to help define and operationalize an efficient post–go-live SDLC, and will use AI-assisted approaches (chatbots/assistants) to streamline communication, requirements gathering, task management, and code review—starting with low-risk, internal productivity use cases.

Duties and Responsibilities
D365 F&O Development (Primary)

Develop, customize, and maintain solutions in D365 F&O using X++, following established extension patterns and standards.

Design and deliver custom data entities and reporting-friendly data structures to support Power BI reporting and analytics needs.

Implement, complete, and maintain integrations between D365 F&O and other systems, with priority on WMS integration and shop floor/3rd-party connected systems.

Provide technical support and resolve issues related to D365 F&O customizations and integrations, balancing speed with operational stability.

Participate in code reviews, testing, documentation, and release activities to ensure reliable delivery.

Partner Collaboration & Knowledge Transfer (Early Tenure Focus)

Pair closely with the Microsoft partner development team to ramp up on solution design decisions, code structure, naming conventions, and deployment practices.

Actively document and internalize key implementation knowledge (patterns, integration behaviors, troubleshooting guides, and known risks) to reduce long-term dependency on the partner.

SDLC / DevOps Enablement (Post–Go-Live Operating Model)

Help define and improve our post–go-live SDLC, including work intake, prioritization, user story standards, testing expectations, release cadence, and hotfix procedures.

Improve and help administer Azure DevOps practices (Boards, Repos, PR policies, build validation, pipelines) to support predictable delivery and quality outcomes.

Ensure compliance with SDLC processes (code reviews, testing, documentation), while also optimizing the SDLC for manufacturing/warehouse reliability and supportability.

AI-Assisted Enablement (Internal Productivity First)

Leverage AI responsibly to improve team efficiency in areas such as communication and status summaries; task management and backlog grooming; requirements gathering and user story creation (acceptance criteria completeness); and read-only code review assistance (risk flags, best practice reminders).

Establish and follow guardrails for AI usage (internal productivity first; human validation required; no sensitive data exposure).

Platform & Lifecycle Support

Support planning, testing, and implementation of Microsoft quarterly updates to D365 F&O (impact assessment, regression considerations, deployment coordination).

Stay current with Microsoft updates and best practices for D365 F&O and related technologies.

Note: The role may also assist with adjacent needs (e.g., Power Platform) when it supports reporting, workflow, or integration objectives, but the primary focus is D365 F&O development, integrations, and SDLC enablement.

Qualifications
Required

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field or equivalent practical experience.

Hands‑on experience developing for D365 F&O (X++) (or comparable ERP customization experience with demonstrated ability to ramp quickly).

Strong understanding of ERP data models, extension patterns, and integration concepts.

Experience with integrations (APIs, data entities, batch processing, error handling, retry strategies).

Demonstrated experience improving or operating an SDLC/DevOps process (Agile/DevOps; CI/CD concepts; PR/review practices).

Strong communication skills, documentation habits, and the ability to partner with functional/business stakeholders.

Preferred

Experience with WMS integrations and/or shop floor manufacturing/warehouse-connected systems.

Experience building or extending Power BI reporting entities/datasets and supporting reporting consumers.

Experience with Azure DevOps (Boards, Repos, Pipelines) and release management.

Familiarity with integration technologies such as OData, REST APIs, or Azure services.

Experience using AI tools to improve requirements quality, team communication, task management, or code review (with appropriate governance).

Microsoft certifications in D365 F&O or related areas.

Core Competencies

Technical proficiency in X++ and D365 F&O customization, including extension best practices.

Integration mindset: ability to diagnose and improve end‑to‑end system flows (especially warehouse and shop floor impacts).

Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with an operations‑aware approach to risk and stability.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively (internal teams + Microsoft partner).

Strong communication and documentation skills; knowledge transfer orientation.

Detail‑oriented with a focus on quality, continuous improvement, and building scalable processes (SDLC/DevOps).
