Under limited supervision, demonstrate independent judgment in the preparation of biological specimens for cytogenetic analyses, perform analyses, and prepare and describe karyotypes. Communicate results to the laboratory director, physicians and other technologists.

How You’ll Impact Patient Care:
- Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Perform both routine and complex non-waived high complexity laboratory tests in the Medical Genetics labs of the Department of Pathology.
- Supply physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results.
- Provide services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory areas.
- Initiate and maintain short/long term cell cultures, harvest specimens, and perform various banding/staining methods; experience with chromosome, FISH, and microarray samples for constitutional and neoplastic specimens is a plus.
- Ability to recognize human chromosome banding patterns using visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail providing analysis using ISCN standards.
- Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
- Microscopically analyze, karyotype, print and summarize analyses on amniotic fluid, chorionic villi, blood, bone marrow, solid tumor, and various other tissue specimens using Applied Spectral Imaging software.
- Confirm and verify results through an in-depth knowledge of instruments, principles, and techniques.
- Perform and document quality assurance, quality control, and equipment maintenance; recognizing problems, identifying causes, and determining solutions.
- Communicate results to laboratory directors, physicians and other technicians.
- Data handling and input, answering phones and customer requests, and perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.
Education/Experience/Certifications to Qualify:
- Bachelor of Science degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science, or equivalent.
- ASCP certified Technologist in Cytogenetics – CG(ASCP).
