Cytogenetic Technologist I - Atrium Health Core Lab - FT Evenings

Job Summary

Performs sample setup, harvesting, slide preparation and staining, microscopic analysis, photography, karyotyping, and FISH analysis.

Essential Functions
  • Ensures specimen integrity during all processing phases.
  • Performs culturing procedures including blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures; monitors growth, and manages feeding, subculturing, and harvesting.
  • Prepares slides and applies staining techniques such as Geisma, Q-, R-, C-band, and NOR staining.
  • Conducts detailed microscopic analysis, rules out chromosomal mosaicism, and operates automated karyotyping equipment.
  • Performs FISH processing and analysis.
  • Maintains records, manages supplies, trains new personnel, implements new procedures, and participates in educational programs.
  • Utilizes cryogenic technology for specimen storage if applicable.
  • Coordinates functions with laboratory staff according to the job description.
  • Manages quality control, including incubator CO2 levels, N2 levels, and equipment maintenance.
  • Stays informed about advancements in cytogenetics and participates in validation studies for new tests.
  • Reports issues affecting patient care to supervisors.
  • Uses LIS and equipment data management effectively.
Physical Requirements

Extended sitting and standing, manual dexterity, and working with biohazardous materials, chemicals, fire, and mechanical hazards. May need to stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Life Science, Medical Laboratory Science (ASCP or equivalent), or Cytogenetics Technologist (ASCP or equivalent) required.
