Job description

Overview

Job Summary

Performs sample setup, harvesting, slide preparation and staining, microscopic analysis, photography, karyotyping, and FISH analysis.

Essential Functions

  1. Assures integrity of the specimens during all phases of processing.
  2. Performs culturing procedures including blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures; monitors growth; and makes decisions on feeding, subculturing, and harvesting.
  3. Prepares slides and performs staining techniques such as Geisma, Q-, R-, C-band, and NOR staining.
  4. Conducts detailed microscopic analysis, rules out chromosomal mosaicism, and operates automated karyotyping equipment.
  5. Performs FISH processing and analysis.
  6. Manages record keeping, maintains supplies, trains new personnel, and implements new procedures.
  7. May apply cryogenic technology for specimen storage.
  8. Coordinates with laboratory personnel according to the job description.
  9. Manages quality control of culture apparatus, including monitoring CO2 levels, supply, disinfection, maintenance, and liquid nitrogen levels.
  10. Stays informed about research and development in cytogenetics.
  11. Participates in validation studies for new test development and reports issues affecting patient care.
  12. Utilizes LIS and data management skills effectively.

Physical Requirements

Long periods of sitting and standing, manual dexterity, working with biohazardous, chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. May be required to stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in Life Science or related field, and certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or Technologist in Cytogenetics (ASCP) or equivalent.
