UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is hiring a Cytogenetic Technologist or Specialty Cytogenetic Technologist to support the UPMC Cytogenetic Laboratory (UCL). The role is scheduled for daylight hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

The UCL is a state-of-the-art facility performing chromosome studies using traditional and molecular cytogenetics techniques, including FISH and aCGH, to provide patients with accurate diagnoses.

Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on experience and education. The salary for the Specialty Cytogenetic Technologist starts at $29.46/hour.

Responsibilities:

• Initiate cultures using sterile techniques following procedures.
• Monitor growth and determine readiness for harvest.
• Follow reporting procedures for incidents affecting patient care.
• Adjust harvesting procedures based on environmental conditions.
• Select correct culture media and incubate appropriately.
• Prepare slides and analyze for chromosomal defects.
• Perform specimen harvesting, slide making, and banding as needed.
• Determine number of cultures based on sample size and diagnosis.
• Perform subcultures and maintain records of all procedures.
• Perform techniques for preliminary diagnosis on STAT newborns.
• Perform banding, staining, and chromosome analysis.
• Maintain incubator conditions and capture images of chromosomes.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry.
• At least 1 year of lab experience.
• Ability to perform advanced genetic tests, interpret results, and troubleshoot instruments.
• Skill in preparing cultures, slides, and karyotypes.
• Interpersonal skills to communicate with staff, physicians, and patients.

Specialty Cytogenetic Technologist Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry.
• Minimum of three years of clinical cytogenetics lab experience.
• Certification as a Technologist in Cytogenetics (CG(ASCP)).
• Demonstrated competencies and knowledge of patient care across age groups.
• Ability to perform and interpret advanced genetic tests and maintain instruments.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

• Act 34 clearance.
• CG(ASCP) certification required and must be maintained.
