Job summary

VPT, Inc. is seeking a Cybersecurity & IT Systems Intern to help protect, monitor, and maintain secure IT systems in a regulated manufacturing environment. This on-site role in Blacksburg, VA offers hands-on experience with enterprise tools, endpoint protection, and security automation.

You will gain exposure to Windows/Azure/Office 365 security, patch management, incident response, and DoD/CMMC Level 2 compliance within a 10-week summer program from August 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026.

Qualifications

• Pursuing or recent graduate in IT, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or Computer Science at a SWVA CCI institution.
• Basic understanding of Windows security, Office 365 hardening, network security, endpoint protection, and ticketing systems.
• Interest in cybersecurity operations, incident response, and threat detection.
• Experience with or curiosity about SQL, VMware, Nutanix, and Fortinet.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• Ability to research issues online and learn independently.

Responsibilities

• Assist with day-to-day cybersecurity and IT support tasks across Windows, Azure, and Office 365.
• Help identify and respond to security incidents and alerts.
• Use FreshService for ticketing and documentation of issues.
• Research and troubleshoot errors, vulnerabilities, and misconfigurations using trusted sources.
• Support Fortinet security systems and apply secure configuration practices.
• Participate in user access reviews, MFA troubleshooting, and endpoint checks.
• Learn to detect and resolve issues indicating security risks.
• Assist with security patch management and CVE mitigation; antivirus monitoring.
• Collaborate with IT and cybersecurity teams to meet DoD and CMMC Level 2 requirements.
