Job summary

Novax Recruitment Ltd is partnering with an established AISC-certified structural steel fabricator in Western New York to hire a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). This shop-based role focuses on overseeing welding and fabrication quality, ensuring compliance with AWS D1.1 and D1.5, and coordinating NDT activities as needed.

Qualifications

• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required.
• Experience in structural steel fabrication and welding inspection.
• Strong knowledge of AWS D1.1; D1.5/bridge fabrication preferred.
• Experience in an AISC-certified fabrication environment preferred.
• Ability to interpret structural drawings, welding symbols, WPSs and project specs.
• Familiarity with UT/MT/PT/RT NDT methods is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Inspect structural steel, bridge components and welded assemblies across fabrication.
• Perform visual weld inspections (VT) and identify defects or non-conformances.
• Ensure compliance with AWS D1.1 and D1.5 requirements.
• Review drawings, welding procedures, specs and inspection docs.
• Inspect weld prep, fit-up, welding activities and completed welds.
• Collaborate with welders, supervisors and production teams to resolve quality issues.
• Prepare inspection reports and maintain quality documentation.
• Monitor corrective actions and ensure proper resolution.
• Support/co-ordinate additional NDT activities as required.
• Help maintain consistent quality standards and reduce rework.

Location: Western New York | Full-Time | Permanent | On-Site

Salary: Up to $95,000 + Overtime

The Opportunity

We're partnering with an established AISC-certified structural steel fabricator in Western New York with a strong backlog of structural steel, bridge and heavy fabrication projects, offering excellent stability and long-term opportunity.

This shop-based CWI position gives you the chance to work on complex, high-quality projects alongside experienced fabrication and quality teams, while playing a key role in maintaining AWS standards.

As a Certified Welding Inspector, you will oversee welding and fabrication quality throughout the production process. You will ensure structural steel and bridge components are fabricated in accordance with AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, approved welding procedures, drawings and project specifications.

What You'll Be Doing

• Inspect structural steel, bridge components and welded assemblies throughout fabrication.
• Perform visual weld inspections (VT) and identify defects or non-conformance's.
• Ensure welding and fabrication comply with AWS D1.1 and D1.5 requirements.
• Review drawings, welding procedures, specifications and inspection documentation.
• Inspect weld preparation, fit-up, welding activities and completed welds.
• Work closely with welders, supervisors and production teams to resolve quality issues.
• Complete accurate inspection reports and maintain quality documentation.
• Monitor corrective actions and ensure issues are addressed appropriately.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will have:

• Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
• Previous experience in structural steel fabrication and welding inspection.
• Strong knowledge of AWS D1.1 and ideally AWS D1.5 / bridge fabrication.
• Experience within an AISC-certified fabrication environment is preferred.
• Ability to interpret structural drawings, welding symbols, WPSs and project specifications.
• Strong understanding of welding processes, fabrication practices and quality requirements.
• Experience with UT, MT, PT or RT is highly desirable.
• Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to inspection.
• Strong communication skills and the confidence to work directly with production teams.
• Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to the wider quality team.
