Corewell Health’s Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids is seeking a Surgical Technologist to prepare the cardiac, vascular and transplant suites, assist intraoperatively, and maintain sterile conditions. The role supports pediatric and adult cases and requires CST or equivalent credentials and BLS.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent - Required
• Associate’s degree in Surgical Technology - Preferred
• 5 years of relevant experience as a surgical technologist or 6 months CVT (cardio-thoracic/vascular/transplant) surgical technologist experience - Required
• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license - STATE_MI - Required or
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) - AST NBSTSA - 1 year - Required or
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) - NBSTSA - 1 year - Required
• AHA/ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 Days of hire - Required

Responsibilities

• Maintains responsibility for preparation of the cardiac, vascular and transplant surgical suite.
• Intraoperative handling of instruments and maintaining sterile field.
• Evaluate changing conditions during procedures and respond appropriately; support CV/PV team.
• Be available for team-specific call for urgent/emergent cardiac, vascular and transplant cases.

About this unit

The Helen DeVos Children’s Surgery department completes over 8000 cases per year. It has 8 operating rooms including one with a fully integrated iMRI suite. HDVCH surgery is verified as a Level 1 Children’s Surgery site through the American College of Surgeons. Our unit is staffed 24/7 with a team of RN’s and Surgical Technologists. Our physician teams consist of all pediatric certified Surgeons and Anesthesiologists. Helen DeVos OR supports a large variety of specialties including: ENT, General, Urology, Robotics, Plastics, Ortho/Ortho Spine, Cardiac, Dental, Burn, Ophthalmology, and Neurosurgery.

Scope of work

Maintains responsibility for preparation of the cardiac, vascular and transplant surgical suite, intraoperative handling of instruments, maintenance of the sterile field, and evaluation of changing conditions during the surgical procedures, making appropriate responses as needed. Is responsible for maintaining advanced, in-depth knowledge of vascular, cardiac and transplant procedures both pediatric and adult surgical procedures and principles related to those procedures. Integrates services with cath lab staff for procedures requiring expertise in both cath lab procedures and surgical cardiac procedures. Serves as member of the CV/PV team and be available to take team specific call for urgent/emergent cardiac, vascular and transplant cases.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent- Required
• Associate’s degree of Surgical Technology- Preferred
• 5 years of relevant experience as a surgical technologist or 6 months CVT (cardio-thoracic/vascular/transplant) surgical technologist experience. - Required
• LIC-License Practical Nursing (LPN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan -Required Or
• CRT-Surgical Technologist, Certified (CST) - AST Association of Surgical Technologist 1 Year- Required Or
• CRT-Surgical Technologist, Certified (CST) - NBSTSA National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting 1 Year- Required
• AHA OR ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 Days of hire- Required
