Position: Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant (CSTFA)

The CSTFA supports the cardiothoracic operating room under the supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon during surgical procedures. Responsibilities include acting as the surgeon's assistant by applying traction, maintaining hemostasis, and assisting with wound closure. The CSTFA demonstrates competency in cardiothoracic surgical procedures, techniques, and equipment, working interdependently with the cardiovascular surgeon to ensure safe and effective operations. The role involves providing technical assistance and support during surgeries and may include specialization in specific services.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Graduate of an Accredited Surgical Technologist First Assistant Program. First Assistant Certification required.
2. At least two years of cardiac surgery experience.
3. Knowledge of cardiac surgery procedures such as heart revascularization, valve repair/replacement, aortic dissection, and conduction system management.
4. Knowledge of equipment/instrument operation, care, and implant preparation.
5. Understanding of advanced anatomy and physiology.
6. Knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass.
7. Proficiency in advanced sterile technique and asepsis.
8. BCLS certification.
9. Knowledge of medical ethics.
10. Good vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to transfer patients safely.
