Responsibilities

The Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant (CSTFA) supports the cardiothoracic operating room under the supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon during surgical procedures. The CSTFA acts as the surgeon's assistant by applying traction, maintaining hemostasis, and assisting with wound closure. Demonstrates competencies in cardiothoracic surgical procedures, techniques, and equipment. Works interdependently with the cardiovascular surgeon, applying knowledge, skill, and judgment to assist in safe operations with optimal patient outcomes. Provides technical assistance to medical and surgical staff during procedures. May specialize in specific services as needed.

Qualifications

Required:

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist First Assistant Program. First Assistant Certification required.
• At least two years of cardiac surgery experience.
• Knowledge of cardiac surgery procedures including heart revascularization, valve repair/replacement, aortic dissection, and conduction system, as well as equipment, instruments, and implant preparation.
• Understanding of advanced anatomy, physiology, and cardiopulmonary bypass.
• Proficiency in advanced sterile technique and asepsis.
• BCLS certification.
• Knowledge of medical ethics.
• Good vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to safely transfer patients from bed/stretcher to operating table.
