Job description

Adoptions Representative: Be the Matchmaker Behind Happy Endings

Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) | Colorado Springs | Full-Time | Fully On-Site

The Gig

Some people spend their workdays in spreadsheets. You'll spend yours introducing a shy terrier to the family who's been waiting for him.

As an Adoptions Representative, you're the face of HSPPR and the matchmaker behind our best moments: the first meet-and-greet, the "this is the one!" look, and the walk out the door with a brand-new best friend. You'll connect animals with loving homes through warm, honest, informed conversations, and you'll help our mission of compassionate care, safe communities, and socially conscious sheltering come to life, one adoption at a time.

A Day in Your Life

Matchmaking (the fun part)

  • Introduce adopters to the pets they're curious about and guide adoption visits
  • Offer adoption counseling and behavior tips so people choose the right pet for their life
  • Send adopters home prepared, with medical history, microchip info, pet health insurance details, and meds with instructions when a pet needs a little extra care
  • Retrieve adopted animals from the kennels (safe handling is always the plan)

Front-of-House Hero

  • Greet and help all our customers, in person and by phone
  • Process adoption fees, dog and cat licenses, and donations
  • Welcome in-kind donations of food and supplies and get them where they need to go
  • Keep an eye on supply levels and give your supervisor a heads-up when we're running low
  • Keep the customer service area tidy and welcoming

Teaching & Heart Work

  • Talk openly with the community about how shelters work, animal overpopulation, adoption criteria, and euthanasia
  • Gently ask customers to consider a donation
  • Meet people wherever they are emotionally, from overjoyed to heartbroken, and share grief resources when someone needs them
  • Train and encourage our wonderful volunteers
  • Share photos and stories with our Philanthropy team so the community can see the life‑saving work happening here

Team Player Stuff

  • Pitch in with animal care, including daily kennel cleaning and animal movement
  • Help with end‑of‑day close‑out and financials
  • Do evening closing duties: lock up, lights off, building secure
  • Keep everyone, two‑legged and four‑legged, safe
You Might Be Our Person If You...
  • Are calm, kind, and courteous even on the busiest Saturday
  • Communicate clearly, both in conversation and in writing
  • Can think critically and use common sense to find the best outcome for the animal and the adopter
  • Are comfortable with emotionally and physically demanding work
  • Can add and subtract (and make correct change)
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Are committed to the mission, values, and success of HSPPR

Bonus points for:

  • 1+ years of paid or unpaid animal experience (kennel, shelter, daycare, grooming, pet store, farm, vet hospital, or similar)
  • Customer service training
  • Knowledge of animal breeds, nutrition, care, and behavior
  • Experience with Chameleon software and Microsoft Office
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (highly desired!)
The Details
  • Schedule: Full‑time, five 8‑hour shifts. Weekends are part of the regular schedule, and mornings, evenings, and holidays may be required.
  • Location: Fully on‑site. Our animals can't Zoom in.
  • The physical stuff: You'll be on your feet for long stretches, bending, stooping, crouching, and lifting, pushing, or pulling at least 40 pounds (with reasonable accommodations). You'll also spend time at a computer. And yes, you'll be around animals and animal allergens every day.
  • Training: You'll complete required training and skills demonstrations within the established timeframe, so you'll get the tools to succeed.
Why You'll Love It

You’ll end your shifts knowing you changed lives, human and animal. You’ll work alongside passionate coworkers and volunteers who care as much as you do, and you’ll see happy endings happen daily.
