Job description

Summary / Objective

The Custom CNC Machinist operates CNC Lathes and Mills to fabricate parts to a high precision or tolerance. The machinist loads parts in the machine, cycles machine and detects malfunctions in machine operations, such as worn or damaged cutting tools. The position runs proto‑type, single part and production lots, communicates with teammates regarding runs, and maintains a safe, organized and clean work environment.

Essential Functions
  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters, interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Develops CNC programs for part and component manufacturing.
  • Sets‑up mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches.
  • Sets‑up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three‑ and four‑jaw chucks, vises, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, stops, and stock pushers, indicating vises.
  • Measures and performs inspection on parts to verify setup and accurate CNC programs.
  • Troubleshoots CNC programs, machine malfunctions and error messages.
  • Communicates with appropriate persons immediately upon discovery of potential problems and works to solve problems promptly and logically.
  • Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling, and threading operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry up to 100 lbs.
  • Bend, stoop, twist, crouch, squat, kneel, crawl.
  • Reach both front and above shoulders.
  • Stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Perform repetitive arm, wrist, hand use and sensory tasks.

Qualifications
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
  • High School Diploma, GED, or Technical School Graduate with concentration CNC Mill and Lathe operations or industry recognized certification.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience.
  • Experience with Okuma (OSP) and/or Fanuc controls preferred.
  • CAM system experience preferred. FeatureCAM experience greatly preferred.
  • A knowledge of technical drawings is required.
  • Proficient in measuring equipment such as micrometers, indicators, and calipers.
  • Must understand shop math, algebra, and trigonometry.
  • Able to read, write, and have a working knowledge of English.
