Job Title: CUSTODIAN
Supervised by/Reports to: Principal
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Job Goals
  1. Under the general direction of the school Principal, the employee maintains the cleanliness and sanitary conditions of school buildings and grounds.
  2. Reports any equipment failures.
  3. Performs basic maintenance tasks.
  4. May perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
  1. Knowledge of cleaning methods and products.
  2. Ability to climb ladders, push, lift, stop, bend, carry.
  3. Some basic knowledge of hand tools and equipment related to custodian/maintenance work, i.e., buffer, shampooer, stripper, lawn tractor.
  4. Ability to communicate with supervisor and co-workers.
  5. Reading skills to understand written instructions.
  6. Ability to transport furniture and to operate cleaning and ground maintenance equipment.
  7. Ability to accomplish assigned custodial duties.
  8. Some basic knowledge of electrical, carpenter, and plumbing repairs.
  9. Writing skills to order supplies, complete forms.
  10. Math skills to maintain inventory, mix gas and chemicals formulas.
  11. Ability to stand; walk for extended periods of time.
  12. Ability to supervise the work of others.
  13. Knowledge of use of chemical cleaning compounds.
  14. Knowledge of safe handling of human waste and body fluids.
  15. Possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License.
  16. Willing to work overtime as required.
  17. Any combination of education and experience, which provides the qualifications, listed above.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions
General Cleaning
  1. Cleans and sanitizes offices, lunchrooms, gyms, classrooms, lobbies, halls, teachers’ lounges, workrooms and restrooms.
  2. Sweeps, mops, removes scuffs, buffs, strips and waxes floors.
  3. Cleans and disinfects commodes, sinks, mirrors, walls.
  4. Empties trash cans and inserts new liners.
  5. Fills sanitary, towel, soap and tissue dispensers.
  6. Mops and disinfects floors.
  7. Sprays air fresheners.
  8. Cleans drinking fountains, sweeps down webs, dusts windowsills, cleans doormats.
  9. Clean lockers.
  10. Washes windows inside and outside.
  11. Cleans all metal surfaces with metal cleaner.
  12. Vacuums, pre-spots, and shampoos carpets.
  13. Cleans up classrooms, restroom, etc. after sick children.
  14. Washes wet and dust mops.
Ground Maintenance
  1. Maintains the appearance of the school campus.
  2. The campus includes ball fields, grass areas, drives, walkways and parking areas.
  3. Rakes leave and operates leaf blower.
  4. Mows grass using riding lawn mower, tractor or push mower.
  5. Operates weed eater to cut back weeds; trims shrubs with hedge trimmer.
  6. Picks up trash, tree limbs, rocks, etc. from grass area, parking area, and walkways.
  7. Applies weed and pest control chemical, waters grounds.
  8. Empties trash cans and replaces liners.
  9. Sweeps steps, entryway, and sidewalks; cleans off ice as needed.
  10. Cleans ditches.
  11. May service equipment related to grounds maintenance.
  12. Performs basic repairs to tractors, mowers, and weed eaters.
Building/Equipment Maintenance
  1. Maintains appearance of building; performs basic repairs.
  2. Performs minor electrical repairs.
  3. Repairs or replaces lights.
  4. Replaces incandescent and fluorescent bulbs.Performs minor plumbing repairs, replaces commode seats, unstops sinks and toilets, repairs traps.
  5. Paints interior and exterior surfaces; prepares for painting, taps windows, and baseboards, places drop cloths, etc.
  6. Cleans up and removes equipment after completing job.
  7. Performs minor door, window lock, bulletin board, and doorknob repair.
  8. Replaces ceiling tiles.
  9. Replaces air conditioning filters.
  10. Lights pilot light in gas heaters.
  11. Makes minor repair to furniture.
  12. Performs basic repairs on laminating, copying and duplicating machines and pencil sharpeners.
  13. Assembles tables, lockers, desks, cabinets, shelves, etc.
  14. Reports all major maintenance problems to Maintenance Department.
Miscellaneous
  1. Locks and unlocks doors, locks and opens traffic gates.
  2. Turns on and turns off lights, heat or air conditioning.
  3. Checks to make sure no children are present in building at end of the day.
  4. Moves furniture and equipment to include filing cabinets, books, tables, desks, and etc.
  5. Assists with loading and unloading of supplies, transports supplies to classrooms.
  6. Assists with setting up lunchroom tables.
  7. Picks up incoming and outgoing mail.
  8. Stores and loads recyclables.
  9. Orders and inventories janitorial supplies to include mops, brooms, bathroom supplies, buffers, shampooers, vacuum cleaners, strippers, wax, paper products, deodorizers and disinfectants.
  10. Runs errands, picks up supplies, equipment or workers.
  11. Supervises student or corrections workers.
  12. Maintains related work records.
  13. Reports broken equipment to supervisor.
Summer Cleaning
  1. Removes and replaces all furniture from rooms; strips and waxes all floors to include classrooms, lunchroom and halls.
  2. Cleans light fixtures, dusts all bookshelves, chairs, desks, woodwork, windows, blinds and trash cans.
  3. Cleans bathroom.
  4. May supervise summer employees.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use hands to finger, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull carry and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary

Salary is established by the Limestone County Board of Education salary schedule.
