Job summary

Simpson County Schools in Mississippi is seeking a Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and efficient school environment. The role covers opening/closing duties, floor care, window washing, grounds maintenance, and routine repairs under the Principal's supervision.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED and a health certificate, with opportunities to perform yard work and basic repairs as needed. 235-day schedule and hourly pay range are provided.

Qualifications

  • Certification of good health signed by a licensed physician.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Keeps the building and premises; including sidewalks and driveways; neat and clean at all times.
  • Check daily to insure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
  • Sweeps and /or vacuums classrooms daily and dust furniture.
  • Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when conditions require
  • Cleans and disinfects bathroom toilet floors daily, and cleans sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Wax and buff floors when needed.
  • Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice a year, or as needed
  • Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
  • Performs such yard maintenance chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like as necessary to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  • Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  • Make such minor building repairs as he/ she is capable of and as assigned by Principal.
  • Reports major repairs needed promptly to the Principal.
  • Maintains on a regular schedule all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
  • Reports immediately to the Principal any damage to school property.
  • Remains on school premises during school hours; and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized, and when his/ her attendance is required by the Principal
  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the buildings each school day. Assumes responsibility for determining before leaving; that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights except those left on for safety reasons are turned off.
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand. Requisitions such needed replacements from the Principal far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his/ her duties.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within the building as required for various activities, and as directed by the Principal.
