Position: Head Custodian

Location: Pike Road School as assigned

Reports To: Principal

Terms: 240-Day appointment compensated in accordance with the Board-approved salary schedule

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Goals:
  • To lead and supervise custodial staff in providing excellent facilities operation services, ensuring clean, safe, well-maintained, comfortable, and efficient educational and work environments for Pike Road Schools students and personnel.
  • To collaborate with supervisors and school system administrators in diagnosing, preventing, and correcting facility problems or unsafe conditions, taking a proactive role in problem-solving and implementation.
  • To oversee the effective management of the school system's equipment, resources, and properties, including inventory control and maintenance scheduling.

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or GED preferred. An associate's degree or vocational training in facilities management or a related field is a plus.
  2. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in custodial services, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  3. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  4. Ability to work in locations involving heights or confined spaces; to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments and inclement weather.
  5. Demonstrated advanced knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning furniture, floors, walls, windows, light fixtures, and plumbing fixtures, and in making routine repairs.
  6. Proven ability to lead, train, and supervise a team of custodians effectively.
  7. Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions, demonstrate effective interpersonal and strong communication skills.
  8. Ability to read and follow maintenance project plans, directions, and layouts.
  9. Exceptional ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  10. Ability to engage in prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching. 9. Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.
  11. High level of personal initiative and ability to work without close supervision, demonstrating strong leadership qualities.
  12. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, shift work, or holidays if necessary.
  13. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  14. Such alternative qualifications to those listed by the Board may be required.
  15. Strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Supervises, trains, and evaluates custodial staff, ensuring adherence to established procedures and safety protocols.
  2. Develops and implements custodial work schedules and assignments to ensure comprehensive and efficient cleaning and maintenance operations.
  3. Provides services to ensure a safe, secure, and healthy work and learning environment at the school.
  4. Demonstrates a sound working knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment for cleaning floors, walls, windows, light fixtures, and plumbing fixtures.
  5. Performs custodial work that ensures an efficient and effective balance between operational and preventive custodial services for the schools.
  6. Performs duties courteously and professionally.
  7. Scrubs, mops, waxes, and polishes floors according to established schedules and procedures.
  8. Demonstrates skill, safety, and knowledge when operating equipment and using materials to care for lawns, plants, floors, furniture, and fixtures.
  9. Uses proper safety equipment as appropriate when performing maintenance duties.
  10. Stores, uses, and disposes of chemicals, cleaners, and products safely, and follows established procedures and instructions.
  11. Delivers supplies to offices and classrooms.
  12. Moves, sets up, rearranges, or removes furniture as directed.
  13. Replaces light bulbs and ballasts where needed.
  14. Ensures that debris is picked up, restrooms are cleaned, floors are swept and mopped, garbage receptacles are emptied, fixtures and furnishings are dusted, and facilities are made sanitary, safe, and attractive according to established schedules and industry standards.
  15. Conducts regular, routine inspections of buildings and grounds for safety hazards, repairs, or service needs, taking the lead in reporting and resolving issues according to established school system procedures.
  16. Follows established guidelines for dealing with emergency repair problems with efficiency.
  17. Maintains accurate inventory records of materials and supplies, making recommendations for purchases and managing stock levels efficiently; includes supplies for bathroom tissue, hand towels, cleaners, deodorizers, and other necessary materials and supplies.
  18. Follows written and verbal instructions and communicates effectively with others (custodial staff, vendors, school staff, students, parents, community members).
  19. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as an effective team member and foster a positive team environment.
  20. Engages in professional growth and ongoing training and demonstrates professional ethics.
  21. Engages in required orientations, training, safety instruction, and meetings as needed for effective job performance and advancement.
  22. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  23. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by school administration or facilities supervisors.

Physical Requirements: Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force as needed to move objects.

Evaluation: Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Pike Road Board of Education policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
