Custodian - Substitute

TITLE: Custodian

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • U.S. Citizen or authorized alien.
  • High school diploma or its equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Satisfactory completion of two-hour asbestos awareness training course within sixty days of employment.
  • Satisfactory completion of Red Cross First Aid Course including CPR within 60 days of employment.
  • Must be able to read and understand job and product directions.
  • Must be dependable, honest, and reliable.
  • Must pass a general physical examination.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and drug test.

REPORTS TO: Head Custodian, Principal, Assistant Principal or Assistant Superintendent of Operations

SUPERVISES: May supervise others in some situations as directed by Head Custodian, Principal, Assistant Principal or Assistant Superintendent of Operations.

JOB GOAL: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Is punctual in arriving at duty/assignment.
  2. Establishes and maintains good rapport with all individuals in the job environment.
  3. Uses time allotted to the assignment efficiently.
  4. Remains calm and mature in his/her reactions.
  5. Accepts change and responsibilities in a positive manner.
  6. Is supportive of the school district’s policies and procedures.
  7. Reflects professionalism in speech and manner in working with students, parents, faculty, and other staff members.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  2. Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, etc.
  3. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open during the hours of building occupancy.
  4. Sweeps classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
  5. Clears and disinfects restrooms daily and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains.
  6. Washes all windows on both inside and outside as required.
  7. Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
  8. Performs yard keeping chores as necessary to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  9. Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  10. Cleans all chalkboards as required.
  11. Reports promptly to the head custodian, principal or assistant principal repairs needed.
  12. Maintains on a regular schedule all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
  13. Reports immediately to the head custodian, principal or assistant principal any damage to school property.
  14. Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours, when the use of the building has been authorized and the person in charge of plant operations requires his/her attendance.
  15. Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  16. Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the person in charge of plant operations.
  17. Complies with laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish.
  18. Regularly monitors all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe condition.
  19. Routinely monitors fire extinguishers for proper working condition.
  20. Changes air conditioner filters on a regularly scheduled basis.
  21. Provides assistance to central office maintenance personnel when on campus.
  22. Assists cafeteria staff.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Head Custodian, Principal, Assistant Principal or Assistant Superintendent of Operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be in good health.
  • Must possess physical skills and stamina to perform job responsibilities.
  • Must be able to perform tasks including the operation of equipment such as buffers, lawn mowers, weed-wackers, scrub and vacuum machines, tractors, hand tools, and hand trucks (dollies) etc.
  • Must be physically able to perform tasks including mopping, stooping, bending, crawling, balancing, carrying ladders, pulling, reaching up and down and heavy lifting (50 pounds and over).
  • Hours can be prolonged or irregular with some travel included.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

The custodian performs his duties both inside and outside. The custodian can be exposed to temperature variations of hot and cold. Biological and chemical exposures are present. Surfaces can be wet, slippery, and a variety of inclines.

ACCOUNTABILITY: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
