Job summary

Eastern Oregon University (EOU) invites applications for a Custodian Pool to join our custodial team. This pool supports staffing throughout the year in various campus buildings, including residence halls.

Custodians ensure cleanliness and general appearance, assist with moves between offices and rooms, and serve as first contact for students, staff, and the public in a courteous, professional manner. Assignments vary, typically up to six months.

Qualifications

• Physical ability to stand and walk for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Perform custodial duties: sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning restrooms, windows, and surfaces.
• Move and set up furniture as needed and assist with general building cleaning tasks.
• Assist with basic maintenance and supply ordering as assigned.

Job Description Summary

Eastern Oregon University ( EOU ) accepts applications for temporary Custodians to join our custodial team.

This posting is to apply to an applicant “pool” from which EOU will hire applicants as needed to fill temporary needs in staffing throughout the year to help clean the any variety of campus buildings including the residence halls.

Custodians support the goals of the EOU Facilities Department by maintaining the cleanliness and general appearance of the residence halls, setting areas for campus activities, and serving as a moving person during office-to-office and building-to-building moves.

As the occasional point of first contact for students, staff, and the general public, incumbent will be called to answer general questions in a courteous personal and professional manner.

The length of position assignments will vary but are unlikely to extend beyond 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Preform various types of custodial duties: sweep, dust, mop, scrub, strip, wax and polish floors; dust furnishings and horizontal surfaces throughout the buildings; wash interior windows, wash walls; clean upholstered furniture; vacuum, spot clean, and shampoo carpets; remove cobwebs; clean lamps, tables, desks, beds, furnishings, light fixtures and appliances; empty trash and remove from building to waste collection areas; clean and disinfect, kitchen appliances.
• Clean and disinfect all restrooms: fixtures, dividers, doors, floors and walls; clean and shine mirrors, dump trash.
• Make minor repairs, perform light maintenance using common hand tools, i.e. tighten loose bolts, screws, etc.; rehang shower curtains and rods, clean and refill soap dispensers; remove broken furniture.
• Other duties as assigned with special assignments in other areas that are within the general custodial classification. This may include student training, temporary and new custodial employees, and ordering supplies.
• Sweep and mop stairways, entry ways and remove snow from walkways to within 5 feet of exterior entrance to buildings.

Minimum Qualifications

• Physical ability to stand and walk on a consistent basis and be able to lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds; be able to climb ladders and use various lifts; be able to repeatedly bend, squat, and reach, twist hands, wrists, shoulders, waist and hips; and must have good hand dexterity including grasping, holding and repetitive movements.

Safety:

• Ability to understand and obey all safe work practices and safety rules involving hazardous cleaning materials, proper lifting, walking surfaces, machine operating safety, emergency response and building regulations.

Communication Skills:

• Basic computer skills, good communication skills, both oral and written, reading skills, and positive interpersonal skills necessary for working with others in an effective team fashion.
• Must be able to follow instructions and receive supervision on a regular and frequent basis. Work is reviewed on a regular and continuing basis by the Custodial Supervisor to determine whether duties are being performed in a manner that meets the standards of the Department. A yearly performance evaluation is performed to document progress or deficiencies of this position.
• Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment.
• In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Eastern Oregon University does not sponsor applicants for employment visas.

Preferred Qualifications

• Substantial prior custodial related professional experience giving attention to detail and conscientious orientation to completing all work in high-quality and efficient manners.
