Job summary

The Salvation Army Blue Island Worship and Community Center seeks a reliable custodian/maintenance helper to keep the building clean and safe. Duties include janitorial tasks, minor repairs, lawn care, and assisting with program support.

You will report to the Corps Officers and Office Manager, drive as needed, lift up to 100 pounds, and work in a busy environment that serves soldiers, staff, and clients.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license and MVR clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform janitorial and maintenance duties.
  • Empty garbage bags and mop/sweep floors.
  • Vacuum offices, classrooms, chapel, and hallways; dust as needed.
  • Clean and stock restrooms; ensure sanitary conditions.
  • Basic lawn care, removing weeds, water plants, seasonal duties.
  • Assist with repairs and maintenance of Salvation Army property; load/unload donations as needed.

PAY RANGE: $17.00-$20.40

DEPARTMENT MISSION

To support the full mission of The Salvation Army by providing maintenance support for the programs of The Salvation Army Blue Island Worship and Community Center.

JOB OUTCOMES

To maintain a clean environment for soldiers, employees, and clients using the facility through janitorial service, minor repair of equipment, and upkeep of the facility. Ensure that the building is clean and well-maintained inside and out. This includes occasional pick-up/delivery of persons, items, and food/donation pickups.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform all necessary janitorial/maintenance duties.
  • Empty garbage bags.
  • Mop/sweep floors.
  • Vacuum offices, classrooms, chapel, and hallways.
  • Dust, as necessary.
  • Clean and stock restrooms.
  • Ensure that theoutside area is free of debris.
  • Basic lawn care & removing weeds, water, and cultivated flowers as needed.
  • Snow removal and salt application
  • Wash window areas, mirrors, and door frames as necessary.
  • Any other janitorial activities as deemed necessary by the Corps Officers.
  • Duties hanging on Custodian’s Office door.
  • Inspects and notifies Corps Officers concerning needs for major repair, safety, or security issues.
  • Uses basic hand tools to provide minor building maintenance, minor painting, and other related maintenance activities.
  • Maintain an organized area and help keep the building clean and organized.
  • Assist with repairs and maintenance of all Salvation Army property.
  • Assist with pick-up and delivery as designated by the Corps Officers.
  • Regular cleaning and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Working with The Divisional Property Department on emergency property repairs.
  • Assist with inventory of supplies and letting theOffice Manager know to order.
  • Help with loading/unloading of donations.
  • Set up and clean up for special programs.
  • Assist with restocking thepantry when themonthly order arrives.
  • Assist with seasonal activities and assistance (Christmas, van drive, school supplies, etc.).

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Education: High School graduate or GED equivalent preferred.

EXPERIENCE
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance skills and ability to perform minor repairs
  • Valid Driver’s license/MVR clearance

  • Ability to do moderate lifting and carrying items up and down stairs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills using diplomacy and good judgment.

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

A 30, 60, and 90-day performance review will be conducted.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Corps Officers.

This individual works closely with clients, staff, soldiers, donors, and department heads.

In contacts related to this position’s duties, this individual acts as arepresentative of The Salvation Army.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • This position is required to do significant physical work and must be able to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to position self to climb stairs, bend, twist, carry, or remain stationary for extended periods of time; communicate; use hands and fingers; frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and theability to focus.
  • The work environment for this position includes an office environment with a low noise level.
  • Must be able to drive.
  • Maintain apositive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
