Term of employment: Upon Board approval for the remainder of the 2026-2027 school year. Thereafter, the term of employment shall be 261 days annually.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8:
Custodian IV means a person employed as a head custodian. The head custodian means a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating or cooling systems, and to make minor repairs.
The Custodian IV is responsible for maintaining school buildings, facilities, and grounds in a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly condition that supports student learning and school operations. The employee performs custodial duties, preventive maintenance, groundskeeping, minor repairs, and facility preparation activities while promoting a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5.
- Personnel must be or have been classified in this category, or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e.
- Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c.
- Ability to respond to facility emergencies and perform required building inspections during school closures, inclement weather, and other non-student attendance days.
- The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Building and Facility Care
- Serving as Head Custodian: Coordinates, assigns, and oversees custodial operations and may provide direction and assistance to other custodial personnel to ensure buildings and grounds are maintained in a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly condition.
- Maintaining Clean Facilities: Performs routine cleaning of classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, locker rooms, gymnasiums, and other assigned areas to maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe environment.
- Maintaining Floors and Surfaces: Sweeps, vacuums, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, buffs, and polishes floors and other surfaces using appropriate equipment and materials.
- Maintaining Restrooms: Cleans, sanitizes, and restocks restroom facilities to ensure proper hygiene and adequate supplies.
- Managing Waste Disposal: Collects, removes, and properly disposes of trash, recyclables, and other waste materials.
- Inspecting Facilities: Conducts regular inspections of buildings, grounds, mechanical rooms, utility systems, and custodial work areas to identify maintenance needs, safety concerns, and operational deficiencies.
- Operating Building Systems: Monitors and operates heating, ventilation, air conditioning, boiler, plumbing, water, wastewater, and related building systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Monitoring Facilities During Cold Weather: Conducts facility inspections during periods of extreme cold, inclement weather, weekends, holidays, school breaks, and other assigned times to verify proper operation of heating systems, monitor building temperatures, identify frozen or leaking pipes, and protect district facilities from damage.
- Responding to Building Emergencies: Responds to heating failures, frozen pipes, water leaks, wastewater system malfunctions, power outages, severe weather events, and other facility emergencies as required.
Maintenance and Repair
- Performing Minor Repairs: Completes minor maintenance and repair tasks including replacement of light bulbs, hardware adjustments, furniture repairs, minor plumbing repairs, and other assigned duties.
- Inspecting Facilities: Routinely inspects facilities and equipment to identify safety concerns, maintenance needs, and operational deficiencies.
- Supporting Preventive Maintenance: Assists with preventive maintenance activities to preserve facilities, grounds, and equipment.
- Coordinating Maintenance Activities: Reports facility deficiencies and assists maintenance personnel and outside contractors in completing repairs and improvement projects.
- Maintaining Safe Facilities: Identifies and addresses unsafe conditions and promptly reports issues requiring additional attention.
Grounds and Exterior Maintenance
- Maintaining Grounds: Assists in maintaining school grounds including mowing, trimming, litter removal, snow removal, and other groundskeeping activities.
- Maintaining Building Exteriors: Cleans sidewalks, entrances, exterior surfaces, and other outdoor areas to promote safety and appearance.
- Preparing Facilities for Activities: Assists with setup and cleanup for athletic events, performances, meetings, community activities, and other district functions.
Building Operations and Safety
- Ensuring Safety: Follows all applicable safety procedures related to equipment, chemicals, tools, and facility operations.
- Managing Custodial Supplies: Orders according to PCS purchasing policies, inventories, stores, and distributes custodial supplies and equipment while maintaining appropriate stock levels
- Supporting Security: Assists in securing school buildings and facilities, including locking and unlocking areas as assigned and reporting suspicious activities or safety concerns.
