Pocahontas County Schools is seeking a Long-term Substitute Custodian at Pocahontas County High School to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment that supports student learning.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining clean facilities, classrooms, restrooms, and grounds to support a safe learning environment.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, and maintain floors and other surfaces.
  • Clean and restock restrooms; manage waste disposal.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance as needed.
  • Inspect facilities for safety concerns and report needs to supervisor.
  • Prepare facilities for school events and activities.

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and Pocahontas County Schools Policy 4220

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

SALARY: Based on experience and education level per Pocahontas County Schools salary schedule. See pocahontascountyschoolswv.sites.thrillshare.com for pay scales and benefits information.

Term of employment: Upon approval for the 2026-2027 school year. This assignment will terminate when a regularly employed custodian returns, when a regular employee is hired to fill the position, or at the end of the 2026-2027 school year, whichever occurs first.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8:

Custodian means a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating or cooling systems, and to make minor repairs.

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining school buildings, facilities, and grounds in a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly condition that supports student learning and school operations. The employee performs custodial duties, preventive maintenance, groundskeeping, minor repairs, and facility preparation activities while promoting a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5.
  • Personnel must be or have been classified in this category, or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e.
  • Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c.
  • The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants with recent unsatisfactory evaluations, documented performance deficiencies, or a history of unsatisfactory job performance will not be considered eligible for consideration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Building and Facility Care

  • Maintaining Clean Facilities: Performs routine cleaning of classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, locker rooms, gymnasiums, and other assigned areas to maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe environment.
  • Maintaining Floors and Surfaces: Sweeps, vacuums, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, buffs, and polishes floors and other surfaces using appropriate equipment and materials.
  • Maintaining Restrooms: Cleans, sanitizes, and restocks restroom facilities to ensure proper hygiene and adequate supplies.
  • Managing Waste Disposal: Collects, removes, and properly disposes of trash, recyclables, and other waste materials.

Maintenance and Repair

  • Performing Minor Repairs: Completes minor maintenance and repair tasks including replacement of light bulbs, hardware adjustments, furniture repairs, minor plumbing repairs, and other assigned duties.
  • Inspecting Facilities: Routinely inspects facilities and equipment to identify safety concerns, maintenance needs, and operational deficiencies.
  • Supporting Preventive Maintenance: Assists with preventive maintenance activities to preserve facilities, grounds, and equipment.

Grounds and Exterior Maintenance

  • Maintaining Grounds: Assists in maintaining school grounds including mowing, trimming, litter removal, snow removal, and other groundskeeping activities.
  • Maintaining Building Exteriors: Cleans sidewalks, entrances, exterior surfaces, and other outdoor areas to promote safety and appearance

Building Operations and Safety

  • Ensuring Safety: Follows all applicable safety procedures related to equipment, chemicals, tools, and facility operations.
  • Supporting Security: Assists in securing school buildings and facilities, including locking and unlocking areas as assigned and reporting suspicious activities or safety concerns.
  • Monitoring Equipment: Operates and performs routine care of custodial, maintenance, and groundskeeping equipment.
  • Supporting Emergency Preparedness: Assists with emergency procedures and facility readiness activities as directed.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Demonstrating Professionalism: Maintains positive work habits, reliability, punctuality, and professional conduct.
  • Collaborating with Staff: Works cooperatively with administrators, teachers, service personnel, students, and community members.
  • Maintaining Compliance: Adheres to all federal laws, state laws, WVBE policies, county policies, and workplace regulations.
  • Engaging in Professional Growth: Participates in required training and maintains knowledge of custodial practices, safety procedures, and equipment operation.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparing Facilities: Assists with preparation and cleanup for school events, meetings, athletics, performances, and other activities.
  • Managing Supplies and Equipment: Maintains inventory of custodial supplies and equipment and reports needs promptly.
  • Displaying Flags: Displays and maintains flags in accordance with state and federal requirements.
  • Performing Assigned Responsibilities: Carries out other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Principal, Director of Maintenance, Superintendent, or designee in support of the educational mission of Pocahontas County Schools.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, administrators, and emergency personnel when necessary.
