Responsibilities
  1. Operate carpet shampooing and upholstery cleaning equipment.
  2. Operate mechanical cleaning and scrubbing equipment.
  3. Strip and wax floor surfaces.
  4. Maintain entrance areas by sweeping, salting, and shoveling snow as required.
  5. Clean grounds and surrounding areas by picking up paper or trash around buildings.
  6. Unplug commodes, urinals, and sink drains without dismantling fixtures.
  7. Wet mop floors and stairways.
  8. Collect and dispose of soiled linen.
  9. Clean and wax furniture, fixtures, and furnishings.
  10. Clean mirrors and interior/exterior glass surfaces.
  11. Clean toilet rooms and fixtures.
  12. Dust venetian blinds and spot wash walls to remove splash marks and fingerprints.
  13. Make beds and change linens.
  14. Transport waste materials to central locations.
  15. Report repair needs.
  16. Sweep and dust floors and stairways.
  17. Clean small spills on floors or stairs.
  18. Maintain inventory of supplies.
  19. Open or lock buildings or rooms.
  20. Operate lights and equipment.
  21. Replace burnt out light bulbs.
  22. Move and arrange furniture and furnishings.
  23. Ensure cleanliness of assigned areas and equipment.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; follow instructions.
  • Positive attitude and good customer relation skills.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching.
  • No lifting restrictions.
  • Ability to work around sick and disabled patients in a hospital setting.
  • Team player capable of prioritizing work and handling stress.
  • Ability to perform all tasks listed in the Custodian II and Unit Custodian classification descriptions.
Work Schedule

This position is 40 hours, midnight shift, Monday through Friday, 9:00 pm - 5:30 am.

Modes of Work

Hybrid or remote work options are at the discretion of the hiring department and are reviewed annually. Work agreements may change at any time during employment. Learn more about work modes here.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between U-M and the AFSCME union, which covers wages, benefits, hours, and employment conditions.

Additional Information

Background screening and pre-employment drug testing are required and conducted in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
