Custodian I (Day shift) (Maintenance)

The Custodial Team (Janitor/Housekeeper) is responsible for daily general cleaning of all common areas and other side-work in assigned work areas. They will assist in creating a positive impression when members use the facilities and ensure paper products and soap are replenished in restrooms and common areas.

The Custodial Team interacts with members and responds to cleaning requests in a courteous manner, viewing their work through the eyes of the members and paying attention to details that make a significant difference. Tasks include mopping, vacuuming, window washing, dusting, trash removal, and escalating maintenance issues as needed. The goal of the YMCA Custodial Department is to maintain a clean and safe environment for members, staff, and visitors.

The starting salary for this position is $15.00 hourly. Compensation varies based on background and experience and includes benefits and earned time off, depending on employment status.

Job Summary

The Custodian I is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of assigned areas, completing duties with moderate supervision. Responsibilities include mopping, dusting, trash removal, window washing, meeting setup, and general cleaning. The incumbent interacts positively with members and staff, prioritizing member service while demonstrating YMCA core values: honesty, responsibility, caring, equity, and respect.

Essential Functions

1. Complete all duties on the daily schedule, maintaining the assigned area and equipment.
2. Perform custodial duties such as mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, meeting setup, and vacuuming.

Relationships

This position reports to the Custodial Supervisor and works closely with staff to meet cleanliness standards. Attendance at relevant training programs is expected.

Qualifications

Ability to read and interpret instructions, communicate verbally and in writing as needed.

Work Conditions

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in dusty and dirty conditions, and perform physical tasks such as reaching, crouching, kneeling, shoveling, twisting, and lying down as required.
