Job Summary
Under the supervision of the director, the custodian is responsible for maintaining the center premises and its equipment in clean, safe and comfortable conditions. Maintains and does a daily check of the site and reports any concerns to the Site Director. For the start-up phase of 2 years this will be an evolving position. Interim roles and responsibilities will be adjusted and this position requires an individual to be flexible. Job responsibilities will be revisited once all center-based sites are up and running.
Education, Experience And Requirements
- Minimum: High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Previous related experience in general janitorial duties, such as cleaning, repairing and painting
- Ability to read and write to follow written work schedules and keep inventory
- Friendly and cheerful personality to maintain cooperative interactions with staff, families and children
- Ability to maintain personal work habits
- Good health, including annual physical
- Must pass 3 Fire safety examinations within the first 5 months of employment, F-01, F-07, S-95
Pre-employment Requirements
- Successfully clear NYS DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry Clearance, Sex Offender Registry Clearance, three reference checks, physical examination with updated TB test, Tdap, MMR, varicella (fees may apply)
- Meet all employee health requirements in Article 47 (DOHMH) and Head Start performance standards
- Mandated Reporter training certificate (every 2 years) and compliance with agency’s policy and procedure regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect
- Obtain First Aid/CPR and preventive infectious diseases certificate within the first year of employment
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Cleaning: responsible for sweeping, mopping, waxing all floors; maintaining rest rooms and all spaces free of debris, dust and dirt; cleaning garbage bins, washing walls and surfaces, cleaning fixtures, toilets and washbowls
- Records, Supplies and Equipment: maintain Infection Control Logs, playground safety logs, carbon monoxide/smoke alarm fire panel logs; keep inventory of sanitary supplies and request replenishment; repair peeling paint, play equipment, furniture and other repairs as needed; assist in moving heavy items; maintain inventory log and place orders for the site
- Daily maintenance of site health and safety: immediately repair hazardous conditions, replace lights, call management to place tickets for necessary repairs
