Job summary

Minneapolis Public Schools is seeking a Custodian for Citywide operations. The role supports cleaning and maintenance inside and outside MPS buildings, with flexible start times and a PM shift with differential.

Under supervision, you will perform cleaning tasks, assist with moves, and ensure safety protocols. This position requires physical work, valid driver’s license may be needed, and a background check will be conducted.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or equivalent.
• Physical examination: employment contingent upon exam.
• Knowledge of materials/equipment used in building/grounds maintenance.
• Familiar with federal/state safety rules and OSHA MSDS.
• Valid Minnesota driver’s license may be required.

Responsibilities

• Clean interior and exterior areas; wash, dust, windows, floors; clean lavatories; replace light bulbs.
• Move and arrange furniture and classroom furnishings; set up staging.
• Follow safety precautions; report hazards and unsafe conditions.
• Open/close facilities and respond to emergencies; assist with safety drills.
• Provide customer service to staff, students and visitors; assist co-workers.
• Attend seminars and training sessions as provided by management.

The scheduled hours are flexible (5 AM - 2:30 PM or 1 - 9:30 PM). Our PM shift has a shift differential.

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, assists with cleaning and maintenance for inside and outside of MPS buildings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Maintain building interior by: washing, dusting, clean mirrors and fixtures; washing windows, counters and walls; sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing and waxing floors; cleaning and supplying lavatories; replacing light bulbs.
• Maintain building exterior by: removing litter, mowing, maintain shrubbery, edging and trimming of lawns; removing snow and ice from walkways and steps.
• Assist in lifting and moving furniture, setting up portable staging, arranging of classroom furnishings, and other materials
• Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; cleans up spills and unsafe conditions in a timely manner and according to procedures.
• Follows manufacturer’s directions for use and dilution of all chemicals and cleaning products.
• Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries; reports security issues and illegal activities.
• Provides customer service as needed, responds to requests, and assists co-workers, students and visitors.
• Attend seminars and training sessions as provided by management.
• Opens and closes facilities and sets security systems; responds to emergency situations including call backs for break-ins and mechanical problems; assists with safety drills and annual cleaning duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Knowledge of:

• Materials and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance.
• Basic techniques and procedures used in the cleaning and maintenance of public buildings.
• Federal and state safety rules and regulations.
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Techniques for use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.

Skill in:

• Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
• Following and maintaining safety standards.
• Following verbal and written instructions.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed indoors and outdoors at MPS facilities; requires constant physical efforts; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed including use of safety equipment; a job in this category may require walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and ability to frequently lift and move items weighing up to 60 pounds.

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
