Status: Non-Exempt

Under supervision of the Facilities Manager, performs a variety of custodial and maintenance duties to maintain the condition and appearance of university buildings and facilities in accordance with established standards. Must be able to work any shift.

Responsibilities

• Sweeps, mops, polishes, and buffs floors using power cleaning equipment. Vacuums and spot cleans carpets.
• Performs general custodial duties in office spaces: cleaning, dusting, washing windows, moving and polishing furniture and equipment.
• Cleans fixtures, equipment, windows, walls, restrooms; stocks supplies as scheduled.
• Picks up trash and litter; removes and replaces trash bags from containers.
• Cleans elevators and stairwell areas.
• Mixes chemicals for custodial tasks using appropriate procedures.
• Sweeps walkways and staircases.
• Assists in ensuring service requests are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
• Maintains indoor plants in an attractive and healthy condition.
• Performs specialty tasks assigned by the Supervisor for building maintenance and custodial services.
• Oversees or performs complex/difficult maintenance repairs or installations.
• Works from blueprints and drawings to construct and repair woodwork such as counters, benches, stairs, doors, floors, and windows.
• Reads blueprints and works from sketches or verbal instructions to locate rooms, vents, pipes, etc.
• Replaces faulty switches, sockets, outlets, bulbs, fixtures, fluorescent lights, starters, and other simple electrical components.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs sinks, showers, toilets, water heaters, and plumbing fixtures such as washers, faucets, broken pipes, and drains.
• Dismantles electrical machinery and replaces defective electrical or mechanical parts such as gears, brushes, and armatures.
• Repairs or replaces windows, doors, ceiling and floor tile, wooden wall coverings; repairs furniture such as cabinets, chairs, fixtures, and office equipment; repairs loose or broken joints.
• Paints, varnishes, stains, enamesls, lacquer, and redecorates walls, woodwork, and fixtures using appropriate tools and techniques.
• Mixes and applies paints and other finishing coats to interior and exterior surfaces by brush, spray gun, or roller.
• Operates university trucks, forklifts, cherry pickers, outdoor steam machines, compressors, and jackhammers.
• Works with plaster and brick to repair and maintain buildings and facilities.
• Maintains and repairs custodial and building maintenance electrical equipment.
• Uses hand tools, power tools and testing instruments for repairs and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
• Assists with campus moves and special events including setting‑up stages, canopies, public address systems, etc.
• Assists with moving furniture and equipment.
• Performs other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Required

• High School Diploma or Equivalency.
• 2–3 years of experience in custodial, general maintenance and repairs.
• Knowledge of basic cleaning and general maintenance practices.
• Journeyman level knowledge in general maintenance.
• Ability to operate power cleaning equipment.
• Good written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to read label instructions to mix chemicals.
• Ability to read blueprints and sketches.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to bend, stoop, climb, push, etc.
• Maintain a good driving record and meet university’s insurability requirements.
• Pass annual physical, including DOT.
• Perform highly detailed work with sustained attention.

Preferred

• Vocational or specialized training beyond high school.
• CA Driver’s License.
• Additional custodial or maintenance certifications.

Physical and Mental Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform this job, including trunk strength, stooping, standing, walking, climbing, reaching, finger movement, and hearing. Mental demands include calculation, decision making, and concentration.

Employment Status

Position is conditional, funded by Title III and ends 9/30/2026. Position contingent on continued funding. No work after grant end date unless extended in writing.
