Job description

Maine Township High School District 207 announces a vacancy for a 3rd Shift Custodian- 12 month at Maine West beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.

Summary

The School Custodian plays a key role in maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment for students, staff, and community members. This position is responsible for general cleaning, basic maintenance, and building support tasks that contribute to efficient school operations. The custodian works collaboratively with the Director of Building and Grounds and school administration to ensure that all areas of the building are well-maintained, functional, and welcoming.

Reports To and Evaluated By
  • Director of Buildings and Grounds
Performance Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Director of Buildings and Grounds in accordance with District 207's support staff evaluation procedures and aligned to district priorities.

Supervises
  • No direct supervisory responsibilities. May provide coordination or direction to interns, vendors, and student media teams as assigned.
Certification & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous custodial, maintenance, or facility operations experience preferred.
  • Must be conscientious, self-motivated, dependable, and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment such as floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, and ladders.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, chemicals, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete tasks independently with quality and efficiency.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism when interacting with staff, students, and visitors.
  • Additional qualifications as determined by the Director of Buildings and Grounds and Administration.

Duties And Responsibilities
General Cleaning & Sanitation
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, and clean floors and other surfaces.
  • Clean, dust, and wax furniture, fixtures, windows, doors, trim, and other surfaces.
  • Clean and service restrooms, ensuring proper sanitation and replenishment of supplies.
  • Wash interior glass surfaces including windows, partitions, framed pictures, and doors.
  • Clean exterior window and door glass as required.
  • Collect, bag, and remove trash and recyclable materials from classrooms, offices, and building spaces.
Floor Care & Maintenance
  • Clean, renovate, and refinish floor surfaces using appropriate materials and equipment.
  • Properly operate and maintain floor-cleaning equipment such as scrubbers, buffers, and vacuums.
  • Replace incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs as needed.
Building Support & Operations
  • Move furniture, office items, classroom supplies, and other equipment as directed.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, including locking and unlocking doors and windows.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights and verify that areas are secure.
  • Maintain building entrances by sweeping or shoveling snow and treating icy steps or walkways when needed.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Provide general support to staff and administration to maintain a safe and functional environment.
  • Complete all assigned work orders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds or administration.

Working Conditions/Environment/Physical Requirements
Work Environment

Work is performed throughout the school building, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, cafeterias, athletic spaces, and outdoor entry areas. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, odors, dust, noise, and varying temperatures is typical.

Physical Requirements

The custodian must frequently stand, walk, bend, lift, push, pull, climb ladders, and carry up to 50 pounds. Tasks require manual dexterity, repetitive motions, and the ability to handle custodial equipment safely.

Flexibility & Availability

This position may require working evenings, weekends, or during school breaks depending on building needs, special events, or emergency situations. Custodians must be flexible with assignments and schedules.

Salary & Benefits
  • 12-month (260 paid days) - Start Date tbd
  • Total Number of Paid Hours/Day: 8.00
  • Total Number of Paid Hours: 2,080
  • Hourly Rate: $22.53 (Salary approximately $46,854.55 prorated based on start date)
  • Third Shift stipend $1,320.00 (prorated based on start date)
  • IMRF pension employees vested after 10 years of employment
